It had become night until she noticed it which reminded Emma of the words Jean had said. Vampires only go out at night. Not that she believed any other vampire was gonna yum her on her way back but it still made her uneasy just thinking about it.
"Emma?"
She heard her friend only after the third time she called out,
"Are you listening?"
"Huh? Oh, I drifted off sorry, didn't notice it's night already."
She stared at her empty plate and tried to push the building up anxiety back inside. She kept telling herself everything was gonna be fine but it felt like she was trying to fool herself, and it wasn't working.
"Hey, why don't you stay over at my house today?"
Danielle had symphaty in her voice. Emma considered accepting her offer for a second but she couldn't do it. Even if she did then what? She'd put her friend in even more danger than before as if it wasn't enough already. She tried to put on her most convincing voice.
"No I'll be fine, really."
She looked at the time on her phone and put it in her bag.
"Today was amazing, but I really need to go now."
"Wait."
She looked up to see Danielle only a few inches away, but she wasn't focused on her face, she was focused on her neck. She looked down to see her scarf loosened, leaving half of her neck out in the open. She quickly pulled it up and tied it tight around her neck.
"What is that?"
"It's nothing, just a scratch from the car crash."
"I thought you said you had your seatbelt on?"
"It was a shard of glass from the car's window, and I really need to go now."
She pushed her chair back and stood up and this time Danielle didn't stop her. Emma had parked her car at the back of the building, Jean had straightened out a lot of the dents on her car but it was still obvious she had been in an accident. She was lucky she got an insurance on the car last year. They went out of the building together and Danielle walked with her to her car, then gave Emma one last hug.
"Call me again soon, don't leave me worried."
"Okay, I will."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
She let go of the hug and unlocked her car. Danielle looked after her as she drove out of the parking lot and started driving towards her home. She was going as slow as she can while still staying at a reasonable speed, she didn't trust her health enough to speed up yet. The streets seemed unusually empty as she drove but she couldn't be sure if it was just her imagination again, she hoped she didn't start seeing delusions. She couldn't help but press a bit harder on the gas pedal, it felt like when she was a little kid and she'd run down the corridor to her room after closing the lights, like an invisible monster was chasing her and the only way to save herself was to reach her room as fast as possible. She took the usual road to her home and trees started filling the sides of the road, shadows danced between the trees and cold sweat started covering Emma. She knew she wasn't supposed to but the feeling inside made her want to push down on the gas pedal, to drive out of the forest as fast as possible.
Suddenly she noticed something far ahead her, a dark figure just standing in the middle of the road, she tried to steer sideways but the figure seemed to copy her movements and she eventually had to slow down to avoid another car crash. A feeling inside her was screaming for her to turn around, to go back inside the city but she couldn't take her eyes away from the figure. He wasn't moving, he just stood there and Emma could swear she saw a smile on his face. Suddenly the figure disappeared and she started to frantically look around, trying to see where he went off to. She quickly started up the motor of her car but the driver's door was pulled off its hinges and Emma was yanked outside onto the pavement. She tried to struggle but a hand grabbed her neck and hit her head down on the pavement, the world went black for a second before everything started coming back blurrier than ever.
