Prologue

"Jonathan?" I whisper. It's dark and I'm scared. Mommy woke me up in this morning and before I knew it she threw me through a portal. "JONATHAN!"

Where is he? I saw him at the library at our mansion, where is he? Did he also get thrown through the portal or was it just me? Why did mommy want to get rid of me?

It's really dark and I'm freezing. I'm only in my pajamas. My bag of clothes hit me on my back after I landed on the ground where the portal dropped me. And there was something hard in the bag, something really hard.

"Clarissa!" I hear my brothers voice shout somewhere from the darkness. "Clary where are you?"

"I'm here", I say, realising after that I don't even know where here is.

"And where is here?" My big brother shouts.

"I-I don't know", I say unsure. "Jonathan I'm scared".

"Just stay still Clarissa", Jonathan shouts. "I'm gonna find you, I promise".

"Hurry Jonathan, I'm freezing", I shout, tears starting to flow from my eyes. I don't even have shoes on my feet. Mom just took me and threw me into the portal, my bag after.

A few minutes, I think, passes. I haven't learned the clock yet. And Jonathan hasn't found me. I just stand still, freezing.

"Jon..." I see a shadow in the dark, someone is closing up to me. "Hello?"

And out of the darkness hurries my big brother.

"Clarissa!" He says when he sees me.

I start running in my small feet towards Jonathan.

"You found me", I cry. "Jonathan you found me I was so scared".

Jonathan is two years older than me which makes him eight years old. He always protects me and he always stands by me. I'm his little sister.

"I told you I would", Jonathan says and wipes away my tears. "Don't be scared I'm here now".

Jonathan is also in his pajamas but he's got a belt around his waist with our dad's sword in it.

"Where did you get that?" I ask, putting a finger on it, it's cold.

"It was in my bag", he says.

Even though both Jonathan and I are too young to get runes our dad is training us every day. I started my training when I was four. I was so little. Jonathan can handle a sword but I can't, I can't hold a sword it's too heavy for me.

Jonathan takes my hand and we start walking. We end up on a street with street lamps.

"Jonathan, where are we?" I ask, clinging onto my brothers arm.

"I, I'm not sure exactly", he answers unsure, looking around as we walk.

There aren't a lot of people on the streets. I think it's midnight here. But the few people who are out looks at us funny and I become even more scared.

I start crying again. It feels better to cry. Why did our mommy throw us through a portal?

"Oh don't cry Clarissa", Jonathan says, wiping my tears away. "It will all be okay I promise".

"How can it be okay?" I ask.

Jonathan looks at me. "Because we have each other Clary".

Jonathan is right, we have each other. And when I have Jonathan I'm okay, I can do anything.

I was walk so close to Jonathan I'm almost walking on him. If it annoys him he doesn't let me know, he just holds me closer and I take a harder grip of his hand and arm with my small hands and arms.

My legs are so short, so I get exhausted very fast. "Jonathan I'm tired", I complain.

"Come here", he says let's me jump up on his back. He now carries both our bags in his hands and me on his back. I have the best big brother ever. And he's only mine.

After a while Jonathan stops and looks around.

"Why did you stop?" I ask.

"I think I recognize this place", he says. "I think I've been here with dad".

Sometimes Jonathan has been allowed to go with daddy on trips to institutes around the world. I have never been outside of Idris, so the only city I've seen is Alicante.

"Really? Where are we?" I ask.

"I think we are in a city called New York", he says.

"Nyork", I ask.

"No Clary", Jonathan laughs. "New York".

"Aah", I say, not attempting to say it again, some cities have weird names.

"Yeah! Clarissa look! There's the Institute!"

I have never seen an institute but I have heard of them. They're supposed to be really big and beautiful but this doesn't look like that. It looks destroyed, what's the name? Um. Ruins? Yeah ruin of an old church. I, Clarissa Morgenstern, am not impressed with my first institute.

"It's ugly", I frown and wrinkle my nose. "Bleh".

"No Clary you need to concentrate, remember? Father has told you about the glamour, that in the mundane world the shadowhunters has to use glamour to hide us from the mundanes, which includes the institutes", Jonathan says. "So concentrate, the glamour will wear off".

I lean my head onto Jonathan's, looking at the ruins of this old church. Suddenly the ruins disappears and I gasp.

"It looks like a castle", I say.

"It's not a castle Clarissa", Jonathan says and takes me off his back. I take his hand. "It's called a cathedral, it's like a church but much bigger and much much more beautiful, you'll learn about all of this later on".

Jonathan is only two years older but sometimes when I look at him or when he says something I can almost think that he is ten years older becsuse he knows a lot. He knows more than me, a lot more than me. Sometimes I even find myself loving Jonathan more than our daddy because our daddy isn't always kind he can be really mean but he's only ever hit Jonathan. And I hate our daddy for that.

"Do you think we can stay here?" I ask.

"Of course, the Institute has to take us in because we're shadowhunters, they're forced to give us shelter", Jonathan says and starts walking towards the, oh what did he call it, cathedral?

We walk up to the door and knock on a handle attached to the door. It doesn't take a long time before the doors open and a woman with black hair stands in front of us.
