"Rise and shine, Blake!" Brianna burst into my room in her pajamas. I groaned and stretched as I climbed out of bed.
"It's 7 a.m. We're leaving in forty-five minutes." She closed the door behind her and left.
After showering, I dried my straight hair and picked out a red shirt, black jeans, and black Converse. I pulled on my leather jacket and skipped downstairs. Brianna's excitement must've been contagious. Normally I'm a morning person—if I've gone for a run.
But that habit had to go. My dad and I used to run every morning, but with him gone—and after what happened with those guys yesterday—I decided it was safer to stop.
Mom had made coffee and homemade chocolate donuts for breakfast. Not exactly healthy for a doctor, but Brianna never followed her nutrition advice. Honestly, I was glad she didn't.
"Okay girls, just one more, please!" Mom said, flashing her camera at us.
"Mom, you've already taken like twenty. Let us go!" Brianna groaned, bouncing up and down until Mom finally put the phone down.
"Blake, Brianna—take care of each other. I love you two." She pulled us in for a tight hug, kissed our foreheads, and let us go.
We arrived at school right on time. Chris, Eliza, Harry, Luke, and Bellamy all pulled into the parking lot simultaneously. Our group's cars definitely stood out compared to the rest.
The bell rang right after our greetings. Like the self-appointed "cool kids," we walked through the halls in formation. People moved aside to greet and compliment us. This school was clearly still under the spell of jocks and cheerleaders.
Surprisingly, my locker was next to Brianna's. We emptied our bags and got organized, then headed to our first class as the second bell rang.
When I walked into the classroom, I scanned for a seat. Bellamy gestured toward an empty chair between him and Harry in the back row. I made my way over, but just then, the teacher noticed me.
"You're late," said a middle-aged, bald man walking toward me.
"Sorry. I didn't know where class was," I lied. Truthfully, Brianna had walked me there, but we got sidetracked talking to people, which made me late.
"What's your name, young lady?" he asked, checking his attendance list.
"Blake Jane."
He looked me over and raised an eyebrow. "Oh. I thought Blake was a boy." I sighed, rolled my eyes, and sat down without replying.
The rest of the period passed uneventfully. Bellamy and Harry kept cracking jokes, but the teacher let it slide—it was the first day, after all.
After a few more classes, it was finally lunchtime. Bellamy led me to an empty table in the middle of the cafeteria. Harry and Eliza joined us, while the boys went to grab food.
"What's with the bedhead?" I asked Eliza, nodding toward Harry.
"Oh, uh—we were, uh..." she turned red and looked down. I laughed.
"Got it. Just make sure to fix yourselves up next time," I said, winking.
"So, how's your day going?" Brianna asked, plopping down in front of me with Chris, who had his arm around her.
"Pretty good so far. Most of you are in my classes, so that helps."
Just then, Bellamy and Harry returned with our lunch. They sat beside Eliza and me. Luke arrived shortly after, a trail of girls practically drooling behind him.
"How many did you get?" Bellamy asked Luke.
I rolled my eyes, remembering their ridiculous game from the amusement park—seeing how many girls they could kiss. Apparently, they were restarting it for the school year.
