CHAPTER 2: MAYBE THINGS CAN CHANGE

I wish things were that easy. That I could just tell my mom the things Jacob had done to me. But I couldn't. The truth was, I didn't actually tell my mom that Jacob was abusive towards me. I told her that I thought it was time for a fresh start. If she knew what he did, there would no longer be a Jacob to run away from. And telling myself that I wasn't running, was the biggest lie I have ever told anyone.

"Well, it's going to be so hard saying goodbye to the friends that I don't have." I whispered under my breath as I picked up the last box from my room and headed back to the moving truck. I was finally leaving the hell hole...not California...my relationship. My family didn't know where the sudden change of heart was coming from. For all they knew, I was in a perfect relationship with the perfect guy. But the truth was, I felt the exact opposite. I told my family that leaving would be the hardest thing I would have to do. It was actually the easiest.

"Ryan! The bus is leaving!" My sister, Kate yelled up the stairs. "Be right there!" I skimmed my light blue, bare bedroom...well former bedroom walls one last time. "You can move on." I whispered to myself. And that was it. I was in our shiny little mini van with my family on my way to Davenport, Washington, a town with a whopping population of 1,718.

The drive was excruciatingly long; 16 hours and 49 minutes. Washington was beautiful. Dense forests ran along the highway. The misty, humid air and the low clouds showed peace and serenity. "Do you guys like it?" My mom questioned looking into the backseat at Kate and I. "Yes! It's amazing!" Kate yelled. "Yeah. I like it." I said only pulling one headphone out of my ear to answer her question.

The house was smaller that our old house but it was cozy. Kate and I had our rooms on the upper level with just a bathroom and a study separating us. "I get this one." I chose the room with big bay windows and a lush view of the mountains. "Ugh. Fine." Kate turned and went to her room. I could tell I was definitely going to like it here.

TWO DAYS LATER

"Wake up Ry! It's your first day of school!" My dad kissed the side of my forehead. "Ugh." I flipped over and buried my face in my pillow. "Be ready in 45 minutes." He clapped his hands and went to go wake up Kate. I was ready in 30 minutes considering I wear barely any makeup and my wardrobe consists of oversized sweaters and leggings. "There's my sweet angel." My mom placed a bowl of oatmeal and a coffee in front of me. "Thanks."

"Honey, the one and only thing I ask of you today is, please, for the love of god! Make some friends!" She pleaded. "People don't usually approach the girl that looks like she runs a math lab." I grimaced. "Stop it." She kissed my forehead and I got in my tiny little Honda (towed to Washington) and drove to Davenport high.

The school was fairly big considering the population of the town. It was raining that day, just like the day before. I parked in the lot closest to the admission office. "Hi there! What's your name and grade?" A lady with goofy blonde hair and an almost TO enthusiastic voice spoke. "Um..Ryan Summers. Junior."

"Okay so you're new! I will show you to your first class which seems to be Chemistry with Professor Andrews." I nodded and followed her to the small class room. All the other kids were talking and had there eyes glued to their phones. "This is Ryan, Professor Andrews." Professor Andrews was a tall man, his thin grey hair was balding. "Nice to meet you. As you can see, this class is hard to control but I'm sure you'll find a friend. They are all great kids. Just find any open seat." He sat back down and got back to what ever the hell he was doing. "Great." I scoffed.

The only open seat was in the back of the room...as usual. I took my seat and opened up my book. I had a phone I just had no use for it. "Okay! Everyone settle down!" Professor Andrews yelled. I kept my face buried in my book until everyone was seated and when I looked up, I saw someone. Someone I couldn't take my eyes off of.
