Hey look! New chapter!

About time, huh?

School has been crazy the past couple months. But I will try to write more frequently now that things have quieted down! :)

I hope that everyone who was following this story will not have given up on it! But I can't say I'd blame them if they have...

Anyway, happy reading! And don't forget to comment and point out all the mistakes I make ;)

Reirdan's lungs were filled with smoke and his back and arms were painfully sore by the time the fire was put out. The air still reaked of smoke. The crowd that gathered around the scorched shell of the building was grave and silent. Some of the people wore horrified expressions.

"Gladar- he was here!" someone whispered, clearly unable to believe it.

"Is it true?" said a voice from behind Reirdan. He turned to look straight into the bright blue, anxious eyes of Levelle. "Has Gladar really captured Aragus?"

Reirdan could only nod. He had not seen Levelle for a long while. It had been nearly seven years since he had saved her and her brother from an unjust execution.

"What are we to do?" she asked, her eyes glazed with worry.

"I don't know," Reirdan frowned.

Just then, he noticed a group gathering before the charred building. It was the Council members. Reirdan moved past Levelle and hurried toward the gathering.

"We have to rescue him!" exclaimed one member.

"Nonsense," scoffed a short, plump woman to the left of where Reirdan stopped to join the group. Reirdan recognized her as Reinda. "We don't have to do anything of the sort. He's gone, he's gone"- here, she shrugged- "We cannot endanger more of our people. We will simply have to replace him."

These words enraged Reirdan so greatly that it surprised him that he had not already socked her in her foolish mouth.

"Are you insane?" Reirdan nearly bellowed at the stupid woman. "It is against the entire Valteri Code to assign a new leader while the current leader still lives! Not to mention that part of the code that states that we never abandon one of our fellow valteri. We cannot just give up on Aragus!"

"You forget, young Reirdan," Reinda replied in a cool tone. Reirdan flinched at being referred to as young, as if Reinda's inferior. "That the same Valteri Code states that we should not risk the lives of any valteri in foolish exploits."

"Is it a 'foolish exploit' to attempt to save one of our own?" Jemelier, a middle-aged woman, spoke out. Everyone present knew her to be a faithful follower to Aragus. She was also known to be the one most likely be the one chosen as the new leader if Aragus were to be resigned. "Reirdan is right. We are valteri; and a valterus always puts others before himself- always fights when it is needed. And this, my fellow Council members, is a time in which we are most needed. If any of you had been captured, do you think Aragus would just sit back and give up on you? No. He would immediately take action to assure that you were back safely."

"But this is Gladar that we are talking about," Reinda said, her voice rising.

"Since when do we flee from mere magicians?" Jemelier sneered.

"Gladar is no 'mere magician!' He is a shydow from the Shadowlands."

"And did our ancestors back down and allow the shydows to take what they wanted back in the Great War?"
