Confused teachers tentatively trying out pencils and pens and using notebooks for their teaching plans. Since Muggle stores are nowhere near Hogwarts, students having a black market trade in Muggle school supplies. Muggle-borns catching on and asking their parents to send (by owl) as many supplies the owl can carry.
