Astonishingly, Delphine's mother allowed her to take a stroll in the garden before the stupid dress fitting. Ballgowns, empire waists, a-line, mermaid, corset. These were all frequently spoken words in the local seamstress office. Why couldn't life be... normal? Of course, not much more or less could be expected from a castle-dwelling maiden. And looking presentable was very important to Queen Belle, the "most loved" queen of all time. The smartest, the smallest nose, the sweetest disposition, a tinkling laugh, dainty feet, silent sips. (Delphine, as a teenager, is going through her "What am I? Who am I?" Stage, so this is normal) "Darling?" A gruff voice tore through her thoughts. "Yes, father?" Delphine called as she elegantly lept up the stairs. "The queen wants you." He lowered his voice. "Sorry, kid. I hate fittings, too. But it's gotta happen, ya know?" Delphine sighed. "I know, Dad. Well, let's get the torture over with."

                                                        ********************

"Ow!" Delphine's piercing shriek echoed across the castle. "Apologies, your majesty." The clumsy girl that worked for the royal seamstress had only been there for 2 weeks, and was not as skilled at the trade as the ancient woman who had worked there for lord-knows how long. Too many of the young interns were turned away because they weren't good enough at avoiding flesh while stitching. This maiden, who had poked Delphine five times in the last minute, was unlikely to last much longer.  Poor thing, Delphine thought. So young to be working, so inexperienced. Peasants had such hard lives. And why were they called peasants? Compared to birds, thrown aside like worthless scum. And then came the most beautiful sound Delphine had ever heard, coming from the windowsill. Entranced, she stepped down from the podium on which she had been measured, and looked out the pane. A bird was flitting about the castle. On closer inspection, Delphine realized that this bird was not ordinary. It's wings were gilded, and seemed to be shifting from deep blue, to green, to violet. As Delphine stared in awe, the bewildered apprentice said, "Uh, your majesty? I really have to finish your ballgown today. I have to hem 14 other dresses for the Blossom Ball."

"Of course! Sorry. It's just... that bird. I feel like I've seen it before..."

"Could you step back on the platform? If I sew quickly, I can finish this dress in about 5 minutes."

"Perfect! But not too tight around the bodice. And make sure the skirt is poofy, but not to poofy. And maybe add a keyhole. And..."
