Everyday I thought about him. What I've done to him. I left him, betrayed him.Thomas and I have always been working together, studying humans and survival. We were studying the immunes's brains and how they reacted to different things. Immunes are fascinating. They can survive and fight the flare. It's a man-made virus that eats away at the brain, eventually turning its victims into bloodthirsty and cannibal humans.
We caught a few of the immunes from the population and sent them against their will in a place we created. We sent them in the 'glade'. We send one per month and make them forget everything but their names.
The glade is surrounded by a gigantic maze. So the test here, is to see if they can figure out how to get out.
The boss was suspecting Thomas to be an immune due to his uncommon behaviour. He was kind hearted and full of life. So the boss injected him with the virus, ad the tests were negative. He was an immune. We had to send him away, in this maze, where he wouldn't remember anything and could die.
And I felt so guilty. Me and Thomas had a special bond. We could communicate telepathically. We could literally speak to each other with our minds and this is how I knew if he was okay. But when they sent him away, his voice disappeared from my head. And this is what was the hardest: not knowing how he was feeling.

"Y/N, you are requested to the medical room.", my boss said, opening my bedroom door.
"You know you can just call it a clinic.", I groaned, getting up form my small, "And why? I look pretty healthy.", I said.
"It's just a general examination, everyone is going through it this week.", she answered. I nodded my head and walked passed her.
"And, Y/N!", she called. I turned to her. "I've noticed that you're not as productive and motivated since Thomas was sent away, and I understand. You guys had a special bond but he was a threat to the population and we need him, to study him.", she explained.
"Yeah he was the one studying and working for you months ago, he did nothing to deserve this.", I answered, coldly.
I sighed as my boss didn't answer and walked away.
--
"What are you injecting?", I asked as the doctor grabbed a syringe.
"We're just preventing a new virus we discovered recently. Basically just a bad cold but we never know.", she answered. I nodded and winced as the needle pierced my skin. The doctor injected whatever liquid was in the syringe and passed me a bandage for my small wound.
"You are free to go now."

The days following the injection, I felt different. Like an itch in my brain, but nothing painful, just like something bothering me.
"How are you feeling?", my boss asked as I entered the office.
"Fine.", I answered.
"You know I was thinking about Thomas. And I was thinking about the bond you two had and I concluded that there is no possible way for him to be an immune if you're not, not with the connexion you have with him. So I'm going to ask you again, how are you feeling?", she asked.
My breath caught in my throat. She thought I was immune, that meant she was going to send me away. And I would be lost.
I put two together and realized that the injection was no vaccine, it was the flare virus. And I was feeling just fine.
