CHAPTER 1.
******
The warmth of the morning sun hit my face as I woke up. I opened my eyes, everything a blur, and yawned. I grabbed my glasses off the nightstand and adjusted to the light from the blinding sun. An alert came from my laptop so I opened it up and checked. It was from the book club I'm in, letting me know that the meeting was canceled for today. I guess I should've been happy, considering the fact that the meetings are too long, I'm always way ahead of everyone on reading, and the head of the club is a pain in the butt, but I wasn't happy because at least the club gave me something to do on Saturdays.
My mom's voice was coming from downstairs so I assumed she was on the phone. She's always either at work or when she's at home, she's working on the computer or the phone. I hopped out of bed, putting on my slippers, then went downstairs.
I went to the kitchen then sat down at the bar and grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl.
"Morning Mom," I said.
"Hey sweetie," she replied, kind of unsteadily. "Can you have a seat on the sofa so we can talk for a minute?"
"Umm...sure," I said getting off the stool and walking to the couch while munching on my apple.
When I sat down, my mom sat facing me and took my hand into hers. I frowned, a little confused but I knew something disappointing was about to be said.
"Well, I just got off the phone with my boss and he told me some news," she said, nervously smiling. "He told me that one of my colleagues has come up with some great ideas for our company that could help us with research."
My mom is a very advanced zoologist and so she's always doing research and traveling.
"Uh huh. Okay...." I said with a mouthful of apple.
"And part of that is to do more research in another country...such as Australia...where the company will be transferring for the summer..." she said cringing.
I nearly choked on my apple. "WHAT?!" I said, jumping up and slamming my half-eaten apple on the coffee table.
"Wow. Amazing how I totally saw that coming," she said to herself. "Ok, Tori relax. It's only for the summer."
"But what if I don't WANT to move to Australia!"
"Then you don't have to. I was actually planning for you to stay with your grandmother while I'm gone," she said trying to calm me down.
"What do you mean stay with grandma? Grandma died five years ago..."
"Yeah my mom did...but not Ray's mom...."
Ray was my biological dad. When I was a toddler, he became stressed out and started hanging out with a bad crowd. They talked him into abusing my mom and then he left us. We didn't have a house, money, or love anymore. He even removed his name as my father.
"Wow mom. You've gone insane to think I'm gonna stay with some 90 year old lady who I've never even met", I said walking away agitated.
"Ok to be fair, she's only in her 60's and you have met her...just when you were about a year old."
"Oh yea, I sure know her so well!" I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
"Oh come on Victoria. All you've ever done over the Summers is go to your room to read, draw, and occasionally go outside to do photography. And even when I try to get you to go hang out in public for some hours, you always say no!"
"So that's what this is about! You don't think I'm social or do anything fun! Well guess what? I don't want to go stay with some elderly stranger OR stay in some boring research center with kangaroos and koalas and people who eat Vegemite for all three meals!" I yelled, then walked out of the room.
"Well you're still staying with your grandma.....and that's an Aussie stereotype!" My mom yelled back.
"Whatever!"
"And we're leaving in two weeks!"
"UGH!" I said running up the stairs.
I got to my room and closed the door. I can't believe she's doing this to me! I thought. .....But maybe she was right. I mean I've never had actual friends and I never go to parties or school events. I've always been lonely. Maybe I should suck it up and go to my grandma's house. Who knows; maybe I'll do something exciting for once...
Nah, probably not.
