"Paging Dr.Stevens.." I heard the over-com announce throughout the hospital. I rolled my eyes and quickly made my way to the nearest elevator where I took it to the surgical floor ward where I knew I was needed. Leaning up against the wall as I waited to reach the 4th floor, I was met by eyes of someone I already knew.
"Good evening Jamie." He winked making my heart flutter in my chest. I fought a smile as I remembered what he did to me. "Tom." I replied nodding in his direction. I could feel his eyes on me as I focused on the small numbers above the elevator doors.
Come on only 2 more floors.. Almost there.. Perfect! The doors opened and I quickly made my way off and over to the desk. "You paged?" I asked my boss Dr.Jackson as he turned towards me.
"Yes, I did. We have an emergency surgery in room 123. The patient was in a car wreck.." He explained handing me the file with all of the patient history in it. "Alright thanks." I replied making my way to the crowded room.
"Excuse me!" I shouted squeezing through some of the nurses and interns who were there to help. "Dr.Stevens thank God you are here!" I heard someone say as I glanced at the patient in the bed who was unconscious. It was a young girl who was in her twentys.
Her hair was full of blood, and she had pieces of glass piercing her skin in a bunch of areas.
"Did you take her up for a ct?" I asked my intern as she nodded. "Yes. She has a piece of glass in lodged in part of the brain." She explained holding up the recent image. I nodded and motioned towards the door.
"Alright. Let's get a move on!" I shouted as the interns quickly wheeled her down the hall towards the operating room. I studied the image of her brain the whole way to the OR and I knew I had my hands full with this one. The area where the piece of glass was lodged was very dangerous, and it was causing her to bleed out.
I followed everyone into the room, and washed my hands. After slipping my hands into a pair of gloves, I made my way towards the patient where I knew I would be spending the rest of the evening. "Well everyone! It's a beautiful night to save lives!" I smiled reaching for the scalpel.
4 hours later, I finally finished the surgery, which was a success. "Good work in there Jamie." I look up to see my best friend Kelly washing her hands beside me.
"Thanks Kel! You off the rest of the night?" I asked as she dried her hands and followed me out into the hall. "Yep. Thank God. This place works us to death." She groaned as we entered the lounge area for all the surgeons. I walked over to my cubby and took out my clothes as Kelly did the same.
"You got that right. You up for heading to Richards?" I asked pulling off my scrubs and changing into my comfortable pair of jeans and a cute cut Tshirt. "That sounds wonderful." She answered. Grabbing all of our belongings, Kelly and I headed down to the dark parking lot.
"I'll see you over there!" Kelly waved as we parted ways to our car. I walked over to my little black piece of crap car, and climbed in. Medical school has drained my accounts, and I will probably be paying off school loans for about another 15 years, so this little car was all I was able to afford.I put the key into the ignition, and start it up, and then flip on the radio to the Country Radio station 100.3 T-Wolf. 'And here is the Kenny Chesney with his song 'Boy's Of Fall'. Kenny will be here in Ohio next week, so if you haven't already make sure you purchase your tickets.' The radio announcer boomed through the speakers as I rolled down the road towards Richards.
Richards is a little bar in the downtown Columbus Area, where every weekend it is full of people who like to have a good time. Although I'm not a big drinker, I enjoy going out to get away from the hospital, and to avoid returning to my quiet apartment.
