You would think that because I am a surgeon, I would have no fears whatsoever when going to a hospital. Well, you are wrong. In fact, it's worse when I know everything about them. One little thing can turn to something worse very quickly. Not to mention I know all of the staff there, and it's embarrassing having them take care of you.
"You okay?" Keith asked glancing over at me in concern as we stopped at a red light. "I'm fine." I replied weakly. The light flashed green and Keith sped down the road. "That doesn't sound too convincing." He responded biting his lip as I laid my head back against the seat and stared at the ceiling of his car. The car fell silent for what seems like forever, and I pondered on what to say to break it. "Sorry about your show." I finally stated looking over at Keith who was focused on the road ahead. I waited for a response, and almost repeated myself when he took a deep breath.
"You have nothing to be sorry about Jamie." He responded as I spotted the hospital sign coming into view. I looked away and touched my arm which was hurting way more now then it did when we were back at the tavern. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and tried to calm myself down as we pulled into the parking lot of the ER. Keith found a spot and parked the car, and then shut off the engine. "Need me to carry you?" Keith winked giving me a smile as I shook my head in response and bit my lip. I definitely don't want him to know I am scared. "Alright. Let's get this over with." I stated opening my door with my uninjured arm, and stepping out. Keith met me on the other side and slipped his black leather jacket off and placed it over my shoulders. "It's getting kind of chilly out." He explained starting to walk. A grin crept up my face as I followed in stride.
Keith and I sat in the waiting room watching patient after patient come in and fill up the room around us. Since most of them are more serious than my case, they have been taken back. 2 hours passed and I have looked through every copy of People Magazine possible, and I have watched episode after episode of Friends which was having some type of marathon on tv. Not to mention I feel bad that Keith has sat here all night with me, when he could be out hanging with his buddies. "Keith.." I whispered leaning towards him. He glanced up from his phone that he was scrolling on and placed his arm around my shoulders. "Yeah Jamie?" He asked smiling. "Look.. You don't have to stay here with me. I can call Kelly and have her give me a ride." I explained. Since I caught a ride with Keith, I let Kelly take my car home for me. She usually catches a ride with Josh, so she had no problem borrowing mine for the night.
"You're not getting rid of me that easily." Keith grinned sitting up in his chair and crossing his leg over his other. I smiled and felt the exhaustion of the day wear down on me. 'It's been a long day.' I thought as a yawn escaped from my mouth. "You tired?" Keith asked. I nodded and yawned again a before I could answer. "It's been a long day.." I stated looking up at the clock. I began to think back on my long schedule when Keith gently moved my head to his shoulder. "Go ahead and get some shut eye. I'll wake you when they call your name." He whispered. I fought the need to argue and felt my eyes droop. Maybe I could use a few minutes of sleep.
As soon as I drifted off, I heard someone call my name, and I opened my eyes to see Keith beside me. He gently pushed a strand out of my eyes, and touched my face. "They need you." He stated as I lifted my head off his shoulder and looked around. The waiting room was now pretty much empty, and a glance at the clock told me I have only been out for about an hour. I slowly stood to my feet, and was lead back to a room. After answering a few questions, the nurse left and I was left alone in the room with Keith sitting in the corner.
"You know, you really don't need to stay.." I said watching him. He gave me a sideways look and positioned himself in the chair. "This is the second time you have brought this up.. Do you want me to leave?" He asked raising an eyebrow as my heart skipped a beat in my chest. I took a deep breath and was about to answer when a doctor came into the room.
