Chapter 1

"Wake up! You're going to be late!"

Slowly I open up my eyes at the sound of my mothers voice. This is it, the first day of my senior year. My stomach flips at the thought of walking into class today. My alarm goes off, telling me it's now 7:00. School starts at 8:15 and I still have to shower and check my bag for supplies and go over my schedual. I quickly grab my phone and text my friend Olivia telling her I'd see her later in first hour.

"Samantha! Get up! I have to leave for work and you can not be late!"

Groaning I roll out of bed and gather my things for a shower. Twenty minuets later I am straightening my hair and applying light make-up. My phone starts blaring Cher Lloyd and I smile when I glance at the screen to see that Emily is calling me.

"Heey babe!" I say into the phone while putting it on speaker so I can continue getting ready.

"I can't believe it's our senior year!" Em shouts into the phone.

"I know, and then college is next!" I reply while grabbing a baby pink, floral t-shirt dress, and a faded, cropped jean jacket.

"Oh don't even remind me! Wait, why do you sound so far away?"

"Sorrrry I woke up a bit late so I'm rushing around trying to get ready a-"

"You want a ride to school today?" she says with a sigh.

"Yes! You are my lifesaver!" I say while I frantically search for my black Toms.

"Okay! I'll be there in ten! Muah!"

I hang up the phone and jog downstairs to get breakfast.

"You're reeeeaally cutting it close Missy" my mother scolds as I grab a coffee mug.

"I got it covered" I say as I pour the scalding black coffee into my mug, then adding some chocolate flavor creamer.

"You're going to have to fend for yourself tonight, I have to stay late at the office and work on some paperwork" she says as she finishes scrambling her eggs.

"Of course" I say under my breath. Suddenly I'm not hungy anymore and my coffee doesnt feel as warm in my hands. My mom is always working. During the summer I can't even count on two hands how many times she actually got to spend a dinner with me. The majority of the time she either stayed at the office so late I was in bed before she got home or she left before I got up.

"Sam..." my mom warns me. We've argued about this before, same routine, I grip about how we never spend time together and how much she works and she shuts me down, bringing up that she is a single mom after dad left us three years ago and now she has to support me all alone and pay for my schooling.

"Sam, did you hear me?" I snap out of my inner-rant at the sound of a horn honking.

"Uh, yeah gotta go, Em's here, don't wanna be late," I saw as I walk out of the kitchen.

"I'll text you later!" my mother shouts as I shut the door. Immediatly I'm hit by the muggy morning heat of New York City. I sling my bag over my shoulder and jog down the steps to Ems' car waiting on the curb.
