Chapter 10
S.p.o.v.
"I know who Samantha is.." Mr. Matterns says nodding his head at me. "Are you staying for dinner?" he asks as he continues to pull his tie off his neck.
"I would lo-"
"No, Uh.. She can't. I promised her mom home for dinner. I should probably take he now.." Niall says cutting me off before I could accept his uncles offer. I give him a confused look and his eyes widen, silently begging me to go along with it. I bit my lip and begin gathering my school books. If he doesn't want me here anymore then fine, I need to finish my homework anyways.
"Actually, Mr. Matterns he's right.." I say and look up at Niall and his uncle to see then exchanging a silent facial argument.
"Please, we're in my house. Not school. Call me Justin.." he smiles kindly.
"Justin.." I say, testing the sound of it. It's strange, now that think of it, I'm in my principles house.. "He's right, I told my mom I would be home for dinner. I should really go" Out of the corner of my eye I see Niall's shoulders slump in relief.
"Well then, okay. Just know you're more than welcome to stay for dinner anytime." He smiles at me and turns to go to the kitchen.
Niall and I gather our stuff in silence. I neatly pack my bag and shut off my laptop before sliding it in behind my books. I hear a mumbled "This is yours" and turn to see Niall holding my, slightly crumbled, math paper. When I take it from him our fingers slightly brush together and he pulls his hand back quickly.
"I'm ready if you are?" I say and sling my bag over my shoulder.
"Hey, Niall" Justin calls from the kitchen. "Your birthday is coming up next week what do you wanna do?" he asks. Obviously using me here as a buffer, by the way Niall tenses at the mention of his birthday.
"Nothing." he sharply answers and turns to go to the front door.
"Nothing!? Come ooon it's your nineteenth birthday! You have to do something? Even if it's just with friends" he says while pulling out the jug of milk.
"I said I don't want to do anything for my damn birthday now leave it at that, God!" Niall yells and walks off toward the door slamming it on his way out.
I widen my eyes at his outburst and turn my head to his uncle who is standing in the door way of an open fridge, pierced lips and a milk container raised in one hand. When he shuts the fridge door there is a loud honk from outside.
"You should go, Sam. Have a good weekend" he smiles and walks around the middle island to step outside onto the back porch.

The car ride home was silent. Niall didn't talk and I was too afraid to, in case he was still angry and yelled at me. I wanted to talk. I wanted to ask him why he freaked out on his uncle when he asked about his birthday plans? I wanted to ask him why he lied about having me home for dinner? I wanted to ask him to finish the question he was about to ask me before Mr. Matterns walked in.
When he pulled up to my house he mumbled a "Thank you and I'll see you later" but he didn't even look at me. So I grabbed my bag at my feet and got out. When I got to my front door and turned to look his car was already turning the corner. Now I'm sitting on my bed with my economics homework strung out around me, music blaring from my speakers hooked up to my phone.
I can't focus on this work. I keep thinking about today. Today I woke up dreading the thought of a "study day" and it turned out to not be too bad, Until his little episode with his uncle. My music is interrupted by a short ding letting me know I have a text message. I reach over to my might stand and unlock my phone.
