Kalista
Teacher's Favorite. That one kid who's good at everything. Lone wolf. All words that describe Kalista. When she gets offered a stop at the top military camp in the state, she jumps at the offer, dying to prove herself. It's during one of their traditional midnight battles does Kalista stumble upon a group of people.
And one of them has wings.
Great, black wings that stretch to the ground, and magical powers that can stop a bullet in mid-flight. Stumbling accidentally into the middle of a war, Kalista finds herself with her own problems. And when Kalista finds her own abilities, she has a choice. Take place in the war as a soldier, something she's trained for her entire life, or be slaughtered. But the choice isn't as easy as it seems. Because when she finds a friend on the other side, things get complicated.
Maddie
Maddie has always been overshadowed by others, and when her mother signs her up for a military camp with Kalista for 'bonding time,' She dreads it. She was never one for physical activity, and she isn't now. But when Kalista vanishes without a trace, she begins to worry. And without meaning to, she stumbles upon a group of people huddled around a fire.
And one of them has wings.
Beautiful, majestic white wings that whisper across the ground as the move, and powers that can heal a fatal wound. And that's exactly what happens to Maddie. She stumbles across both sides of the coin and is taken by the figures with the wings to heal her wound. And they give her an option. Leave and utter not a word to another soul, or stay and take part in a battle that she cannot ignore.
She chooses the later.
But when everything is not made out to be what it seems, and when she finds herself faced with an impossible dilemma, she seeks out the other side for help.
Told from the perspective of two sides of the same coin, this book will have you rooting for one or the other.
Excerpt from Wings:
Kalista
About another day later after my incident with Maddie on the field, we are having our weekly midnight battle. It's pretty much like the normal ones, except you can hardly see five inches in front of you face. It's in the same place with the same amount of people, just a lot darker. As usual, I'm the first one there and the instructor grunts a greeting to me. I walk over to my favorite table, and pick out my ammunition, and run for cover, I'm about a hundred yards from the woods when the first group arrives, but in this inky blackness, they won't be able to see me unless they walk right over me. I quickly find my favorite spot and stake my tree, the battle is about halfway through and I've received nine, soft dinged into my helmet when I hear soft voices behind me.
I freeze, and slowly listen to their voices, all I can hear is a bunch of muttering, but none of the voices are of those I recognize. Without a word, I slowly turn and find myself not twenty feet from the first cloaked figure that's standing among a group of approximately four other cloaked figures. Enough for me to take down, paintballs won't do much, so I take off the vest that holds all of my paint ammunition, and reach for the handgun sitting on my left thigh.
I load the gun and slowly climb down the opposite side of the tree, I take aim at the group and fire. In a matter of milliseconds, the figure thrusts their hand, right in the path of the bullet, and stops it. It's hovering about three inches from her hand and quivering slightly. Then they turn their head toward me and realize they are all girls, all staring at me like I have tentacles sprouting out of my ears.
Out of pure instinct, I empty the rest of the magazine at them, all of the bullets stopping within three inches of the girls. Then one of them has the sense to come at me, so I grab the spare magazine from my pocket and load, I empty it about half way before she reaches me, she has created some sort of shield, that shimmers in a sort of blackish color.
Then before I know it she has reached me and slapped the gun from my hands, she lets down her shield and decides to fight me melee style, bad choice. I've trained in melee since I was a little kid. She aims a punch at my chest and I step aside, surprising her, so she comes at me, no holding back, and I fight back. We are a blur, arms, legs, elbows, and hands are flying, I'm doing all I can to not let my guard down then I feel something hit my head and the world seems to fade away, the last thing I see is another girl standing over me holding my gun.
Maddie
It's been nearly three days since Kalista's disappearance and no one seems to worry about it anymore. Even the instructors are not searching anymore. Some nights I sleep restlessly, thinking about what happened, so I take a nighttime stroll. Often take a path that we discovered on our first day here, it's a longer path, snakes around the property, then circles back to the dorms. If I'm careful, I'm usually not noticed, but on occasion, I have been caught.
Kelly caught me once and I told her that I had just gone for a short stroll, not telling her the fact that I had been outside for about three hours, Kelly then fell asleep and has not mentioned it since. Tonight, I'm not worried as I step out into the cool air and set on my path. About halfway through, I find the bench that Kalista and I made out of a fallen tree. I sit down and take a small rest before I set out again.
Not much longer into my walk, I see something near the path and I decide to figure out what it is. It turns out, it's a fire, not a wildfire, but a small fire created for warmth. I creep closer, I make out six figures huddled around the fire, all of the figures are wearing white cloaks, white boots, and white clothes underneath their cloaks.
That's when I realize that one of the figures has wings, great white wings that extend from her back.
The wings are beautiful and I seem to be drawn to them, without thinking, I step out of the shadows, the girl closest to me notices me first, she jumps up and sprints toward me. Coming to my senses, I turn toward the woods and run, I hear them behind me. I know I won't get far, and I don't, but it's not any of the girls in the white cloaks I encounter, it's the complete opposite, a girl holding a crossbow with a black cloak. She falters, not expecting me, but it doesn't take her long to recover. I try and run pass her, but instead of letting me pass, she shoots me in the shoulder.
I scream and fall to the ground, hearing my screams, I can tell that the girls following my change in direction, sprint toward me. The girl in the black cloak steps over me and stands with her crossbow in front of her, loaded. It's taking all I have not to blackout, but I can't hold on much longer. The last thing I see is the six girls charging onto the path, and the other girl fleeing, realizing just how much were following me, then I sink into a blissfully blank world.
I know this one is a bit longer than the last, but I wanted to give you guys a part of both of their perspectives. Thank you for reading! Love you all!!!
