Xylla is rich. Correction, her family is rich. And that's what allows them to buy a large stretch of land made up of mostly forest. And to say her neighbors aren't happy about it is an understatement. After nearly destroying her family's mansion in a furious protest, Xylla seeks cover from the angry mob in the forest.
But what she doesn't know, is that the forest is inhabited. Not just by animals, but by people. And these are no ordinary people. They call themselves the Hunters. They are a peaceful society, one that has lived in the forest for the past thousand years. But what shocks her most, is that they, the Hunters, draw energy from the forest around them. But it isn't just energy, it's magic.
Xylla wants to live there forever, forget about her old life and begin a new one here in the forest, among the only ones who seem to understand her. But when her own family threatens her newfound safe haven, she has to choose a side. She either has to fight against her own flesh and blood or fight against the best friends she'll ever have.
And she has to choose one.
Excerpt from The Forest:
The fire from the house is behind her, and she can smell the smoke even from this distance. The protesters had nearly burnt her up along with the house. She couldn't go to her neighbors, the closest house was miles away, and her neighbors were the ones currently burning down her house. So the forest was the only option.
She had been in it briefly before when they first moved, but she hadn't gotten far. Her father had stopped her from going farther in. And now, being further in than she had ever dreamed, the trees above her created a canopy of sorts. She couldn't see the moon above her and the stars were no longer visible. The ground is covered with a thick layer of moss and grass, and when she feels it, it almost feels as though she isn't outside at all. The trees stretch far above her head, and it feels as though she's in a room, the branches of the trees creating the ceiling.
Then, without a warning, her foot caught on something and she went sprawling to the ground. She had already injured her arm in the fire, and now landing on it did no help. Hissing in pain, she stands up and turns around, looking for the object she tripped over. In the darkness, she can dimly make out a branch sticking out from the ground. She continues walking, moving forward.
Sorry, this is a bit shorter than the rest, but I don't want to give much away.
