They had chemistry the next day again, and the teacher was annoyed that Mona hadn’t her work done. Because after Elaina had winked at her it was hard for her to concentrate on anything else that day, besides from her. So it’s no surprise she didn’t get it done.
So as the teacher went off on a rant about the importance of completing work, while Mona nodded and pretended to listen, just waiting to be told she had a detention after school, Elaina put up her hand. And the teacher looked at Elaina.
Elaina told the teacher, “It was my fault she didn’t get the work done. I was distracting her.”
Mona’s heart squeezed, she felt it contracting, and diminishing into what she hoped was not oblivion.
“Elaina,” the teacher said, “How did you?”
“It doesn’t matter Sir how. But I did.” Elaina replied, she spoke so softly, as though what she said was just common knowledge of her people. She spoke like a Queen, explaining to her subjects why they were going to war.
So the teacher looked back and forth between the two and said, “Detention, the two of you. My classroom. After school. One hour.”
Mona smiled. Elaina purposefully got herself a detention.
But Mona could only hope that it was to spend time with her. Yet Mona knew the truth. Elaina did it as a friend, because she was friends with everyone.
But a friend to everyone, is a friend to no-one. And was it bad that Mona hoped that that was the truth? Because that would mean that they had a chance of being more.
