My name is Whisper the Silent. I've never said a word in my life. I can't speak. I'm only a year younger than my brother Hiccup. And one other thing, my left eye is blue and my right eye is green. Also, we are Vikings with a pest problem. Some people have mosquitoes or rats, we have......... dragons.
I sit in Gobber's blacksmith watching Hiccup sharpen a sword that is almost as large as him. Hiccup is tall and thin with brown hair like mine and green-brown eyes. He wears a dark green shirt and a brown fur vest, brown pants, and fur boots.
Gobber left hand and foot were eaten by a dragon, so he has a peg leg and he can change his hand. His blond mustache is long and knotted, and he is very large like all the other adults in our village. He and Hiccup rush around the blacksmith sharpening and fixing weapons as Vikings run around outside dousing fires and killing dragons.
I should explain. We live in Berk, a small village 7 generations old, though every house is new. It mostly rains and snows throughout the year. It's either freezing, cold, or chilly, and in Hiccup's opinion the heart of misery. Ever since Vikings first landed here we have been attacked by dragons. Normally we would leave but we have stubbornness issues.
I sigh and listen to them argue again. "You can't lift a hammer, you can't swing an axe, and you can't throw one of these." Gobber says lifting up four rock balls tied together with long rope. They are used to tangle up a dragons wings.
"No. But I have this to do that for me." Hiccup explains patting a wooden cylinder on weels. The cylinder springs open into a large crossbow shooting the rope and rock thing out the blacksmith window and hitting a man in the head.
"Your sister can do all that, so why can't you?" He asks poking Hiccup in the chest.
I wince and look away. I hate it when people compare us. "Axe sharpened now." Gobber pushes an axe into Hiccups arms.
Hiccup drops the axe on to the coals. He looks up at me. Standing I take his hand, turning his palm up I write I-b-e-l-i-e-v-e-i-n-y-o-u.
"Man the fort Hiccup. They need me out there." Gobber says turning to leave. "Stay. Put. There." Then he runs out into the night.
I smile. L-e-t-s-g-o.
Hiccup wheels his large crossbow out of the blacksmith. We run through the village dodging dragon fire and ignoring people yelling at us to get inside.
Finally we reach the edge of the village and stop at the top of a cliff. Hiccup prepares the cross bow and I knock an arrow in my own bow.
"C'mon. Give me something to shoot at. Give me something to shoot at." Hiccup mutters.
We have Gronkles, Monstrous Nightmares, Deadly Nadders, and Hideous Zipplebacks. But what Hiccup wants is a Nightfury.
The catapult down in the bay explodes in blue flames as a black blur zips passed. Hiccup takes aim and fires. With a screech the dragon goes down falling into the forest.
"Yes! I hit it!" He raises his arms above head in victory. Turning around he asks, "Did anyone else see that?!"
Up over the lip of the cliff a Monstrous Nightmare slinks up. They are these giant red-orange and black dragons with a long neck and four horns above there eyes. They have this nasty habit of setting themselves on fire.
The dragon steps on Hiccup's crossbow, crushing it flat, the wood splintering. Hiccup slowly turns around. "Besides you." He groans dropping his arms.
We run, the Monstrous Nightmare following us. When we reach the middle of the village, Hiccup and I hide behind the pole of one of the giant torches we use to scare away the dragons.
Liquid fire pours out of the nightmare's mouth, splitting around the pole. The wooden pole catches fire and the dragon snakes its head around the pole. Frantically I pull back on my bow and release the arrow. It hits the monstrous nightmare in the eye, making it real back. The dragon turns its beady yellow eyes on me and spits a drip of fire. It's all out of flame. Suddenly the dragon leaps at me its mouth wide open.
"WHISPER!" Hiccup screams.
