In a vast magical utopia... hmm, not quite...
In a barren, bleak land... hmm, still a bit off...
Ugh.
Unicorns were less of a majestic, regal people and more of a species of domesticated animals. Think of them as sort of, civilised Neanderthals.
Unicorns were really quite amiable and friendly. One could try to befriend one as a person may befriend a pet, but there's just something in their demeanour that gives a more humane vibe. And frankly, they may as well have been humans.
Their biology, unlike other Divine beings, is a great deal independent of magical intervention. In the way Angels are made of light and Fairies are made of nature, Unicorns are simply made of the organic material found in ordinary realms. The atomic structure of the Unicorns and their realm gives rise to a strange form of magic, hybridised from a mixture of two mechanisms of organic and magical.
Again unlike any other Divine realm, Unicorns really cherished family and friendship. Angels had no reason because of immortality, and it came as second - or rather first nature to the Fairies, so Unicorns were the only ones who appreciated unconditional love between themselves. Even though all Divine creatures alike had very loving attitudes, Unicorns really symbolised the true miracle that is love.Love was held as the centrepiece of Unicorn society, literally. With the strange workings of their magic in their grasp, they crafted a revered artefact. It had the appearance of a huge amethyst, carefully cut, smoothed and polished into a six-foot-tall triangular podium. Levitating eerily just above the podium was an incredibly unique gemstone shaped like the typical love-heart, deep green and speckled internally with silvery sparkles, believed to have some extraterrestrial origin.
The combination of the two components amplified nearly all aspects of the Unicorns' realm.
The sculpture was named the Heart.
... Creative, I know.Unicorn magic definitely took a huge boost thanks to the Heart.
Conventional use was nonexistent. Each Unicorn had their own style of accessing their power. It was strangely unrelated to what was found in the air or in their life force, and seemed to be conjured solely by will.
The power obviously channeled through the horn, and once it was channeled, it could do many things: make things levitate, manipulate the four elements, tap into psychic senses, even expel sums of raw power. There are countless, really.
There were areas scattered across the land which were designated for Unicorns to practice their powers. Often, if applicable, families of Unicorns would use their magic to assist everyday life. The rest of their societal norms were sculpted around the Heart.
Very frequently, individual Unicorns would pay salutation and praise to the Heart by sending beams of their own power to the gemstone, which would send a surge down the podium and spread it far across the land beyond. Once a year, on the summer solstice, when the gemstone itself was discovered, the Unicorns would congregate around the Heart and kneel before it as they cast powerful rays of their magic to the Heart and let the energy cascade throughout the realm. It was speculated whether the Heart was merely magic decoration or a supply of energy beyond magic, because it seemed to others that once the Heart was introduced, Unicorns has gained some sort of, well, sapience.
It was almost impossible to think it was true, but there was definite correlation between the Heart and their consciousness.Such things were discussed in the Centric realm, where Unicorn scholars would commune with other scholars, but they were not allowed to travel there alone. They had to be accompanied by either of the so-called King and Queen of the realm.
There were two royal figures among the Unicorns that acted as the governmental force, but their rule was hardly based on law and order. They were really more like Good Samaritans, in charge of correcting any ugly patches in their world, though never at the expense of another's own contentment.
They rose to governmental power by simply being a pair of immensely powerful Unicorns who offered to defend the Heart from any danger or threat, big or small. The King kept it safe during day, and the Queen during the night. While one kept guard, the other supervised Centric realm visitors.
And under their rule, love reigned high, untouched by any form of negativity or damage. That is, until the Revolt.
Once hearing news of the incident between the two Angels, both the King and Queen hurried to the Centric realm with the intention to help defuse the situation.
It was a huge mistake. Without a powerful Unicorn to watch over it, the brilliant light that flooded out from the Heart began to fade. It dimmed down until the gemstone's exterior looked stony and brittle and the podium looked as fragile as glass.
Once the King and Queen rushed back to again hope to resolve the issue, they were honestly too late. As they sent beams of raw power to the Heart, the podium helplessly shattered, leaving the once levitating gemstone to fall to the ground, sending a crack across its dulled, grey surface and a thunderous tremor through the ground of the realm. Many Unicorns could only grow feeble and sickly as the Heart could no longer provide physical nor emotional support, and the rest of the Unicorns were panicked and stressed having witnessed the symbolic death of love.
Society began to crumble along with the abundance of love the realm once held.
The once lush and luxurious land of the Unicorns was sapped of its supplication, turning it grey, jagged and desolate. Unicorns scramble to stay alive in the now barren realm. But however enervated the Unicorns became, the magnitude of their power remained unchanged.
Even when the defunct gemstone was now missing.
Focus was turned away from the recovery of the missing gemstone and instead was directed at the incoming threat of War.The King and Queen were quick to develop new ways to weave their power that would help in this desperate time.
They discovered ways to make their magic physical, condensed into a liquid or solid, after which it could be moulded into weapons, armour or shielding. The technique alone was a huge change in their world of magic usage.
The King now heads which Unicorns are sent to the Warzone, and the Queen struggles with other prodigious Unicorns to resculpt the Heart from their power.Even though the Unicorns lost love and hope, they were still passionate about resisting a War-induced collapse. They refused it. They fight with the idea of defence in mind.
They're too simple to be Blessed.
