Dr Magna Jakobson sighed as the EMTs wheeled in a new patient. She walked beside them briskly and asked what happened.

"Car accident. He's been unconscious the entire time. Vitals are normal, possible concussion and his arm has a nasty cut on it."

She nodded and looked the patient over. She tried not to get too attached to her patients, but sometimes that was hard. Sometimes, they wormed their way into her heart and she had a feeling this one would do just that.

The EMTs wheeled him into a vacant room and transfered him to the bed. Magna began to hook him up to an EKG and moved the IV bag over from the gurney to the one by the bed. She wrote down his vitals on a chart and slid the clipboard into the holder at the foot of the bed. Magna grabbed some peroxide and cotton out of the storage and cleaned up the various cuts on his arms and legs.

"You put yourself through an ordeal."

She noted the odd gray-blue tattoos on his chin and wondered why he got them. She undid the small bun at the nape of his neck and worked on the buttons of his shirt. Besides a few small scrapes, his torso was basically unharmed. She inspected his jeans, seeing no reason to cut those off just yet. Magna took the temporary bandage off his right arm and cleaned it carefully. It was deep, but he was lucky. If it would have been even slightly deeper, he would need surgery, but this just required some stitches. Magna grabbed the needed materials and set to work.

-

Magna checked the John Doe's vitals and wrote them down on the clipboard. He was still unconscious, but slowly slight signs of change. His breath was slightly more ragged than normal and she could see his eyes moving under his eyelids. She hoped he woke up soon.

-

Magna was refilling her coffee when she heard a scream. She set her coffee down and ran towards the sound, straight to room 118. The John Doe. The empty IV bag was on the floor and the nurse looked like she saw a ghost.

"Sarah, what happened?" Magna asked, pulling the young nurse to the side.

"H-He woke up, g-grabbed my arm, scared the life out of m-me."

"Did he say anything?"

Sarah shook her head and Magna left her to check on the John Doe.

-

Eret felt the pain first, mostly in his right arm and made a face. The second thing he felt was the warm hand on his left wrist, like it was checking for a pulse. He smelled the familiar stale air of a hospital. He slowly opened his eyes to see a young woman leaning over him.

"Where am I?"

"Ah. I'm glad you're awake. You're at the Berk Hospital. What's your name?"

"Eret Erikson."

"Well I'm Dr Jakobson. I'll be your doctor. Are you experiencing any pain?"

"Some in my right arm."

"I'm not surprised. You had a nasty cut there."

He watched as she put a syringe in the IV and he felt the pain alleviate some.

“Better?” He nodded. “Good. Now can you tell me what you remember?”

He closed his eyes and thought back, “I remember driving home from work and there was a deer in the road. I tried to miss it. I think I did. Then, nothing.”

Magna watched as the frustration of not remembering everything became apparent on his face and soothingly said, “It's okay if you can't remember everything, Eret. You remember the accident, which is more than expected.”

Magna smiled and Eret slightly smiled back. She quickly realized she was right. This one was worming his way to her heart.
