Pain. Striking pain. That was the first thing I felt when I woke up next to my bed instead of on it. The second was shock due to the person standing in front of me. Suddenly, I was wide awake.
"For God's sake Casey! Who have you killed now?"
Yes, that's right. Casey Rivera, my best friend, is a trained assassin.
"Hey Amari, its been a while! Like 2 years?"
She looked the same. Her long blue hair was tied back, and her dark clothes made her invisible in the dark. I wouldn't even be able to tell that it was her if it wasn't for her one blue eye.
"Did you have to kick me so many times?" I asked her, rubbing my likely bruised hip.
"Well, if you'd woken up properly the first time I kicked you, I wouldn't have to do it four more times," she said.
"I see you haven't changed at all," I said, walking over to my closet and changing out of my nightgown.
"And you've changed a lot. I looked at you background information and didn't see 'assassin' as one of your occupations."
See the thing is, Casey and I used to be partners in crime. Literally. We belonged to a secret group of trained assassins who kill people for their employers. Or I used to be at least.
"I know you're here 'cause you need help. It takes a very broken, twisted soul to do what you do."
"You're too kind, thanks for noticing that about me!"
I sighed. "Come on," I said, tiredly.
Looks like I won't be able to get any sleep for a while. I grabbed the basement key, unlocked the door, and we slowly headed down the stairs. I think Casey could feel my uneasiness.
"You know, I only did what I had to do out of self defense. Someone's after me, so I came here because I knew you'd help."
I kept quiet.
Is she lying or telling the truth?
We reached the bottom of the stairs and flicked on the lights. Casey laughed.
"You know, normal people don't have a basement full of weapons," Casey said, still slightly laughing.
"I'll have you know that every single one of these knifes saved my life at least once."
"What about those guns over there?" Casey said, picking up one of them.
"Oh those? Those are just for decoration."
I know I quit a long time ago, but you can't be an assassin for thirteen years without having some killer sense left in you.
"Get ready, and then we'll talk."
Casey started hiding knifes all over her body as I did the same.
"So, do you have a plan?" I asked, while trying to decide which gun I should take.
"Yeah, I have a plan," she responded.
"Is it a good one?"
Silence.
"I have a plan," she said again.
Casey smiled at me. The uneasiness was back. As I was counting how much cash I had, I caught Casey staring at me.
"What is it?"
She walked over to me and ran her cold hand down the scar on my check. "Is this from that time?" I narrowed my eyes and smacked her hand away. "And what if it is? Would you apologize for the fact that this was the reason I quit?"
