Chapter 2

As we arranged the bases, Jessica spoke up.

“Can I be a captain?” She asked.

“Me, too!” Selena added.

I glanced up as I laid first base on the dirt. I

straightened up and looked at Keith and Justin

for the response.

They shrugged and Jessica and Selena went to

the front of the group.

“Who’s going to pick first?” I asked and then

held my breath. Jessica…Jessica….

“Can I?” laughed Jessica.

“What about rock, paper, scissors?” suggested

Catherine.

Selena faced Jessica and they shook fists. “Go!”

Catherine said.

Jessica got scissors and Selena got paper.

“Yes!” cheered Jessica.

I sighed with relief and looked at Jessica

hopefully. She looked at me questionably and I

shook my head in Justin’s direction. He was

swinging the bat. He suddenly looked up and

caught me looking at him. He glanced around

and asked quickly, “What’s happening?”

“It’s Jessica’s turn to pick,” Selena replied.

“I’m thinking,” Jessica replied, still looking at

me, confused.

I sighed inwardly and threw my eyes at Justin

again. Jessica finally understood and called

Justin’s name.

I sighed in relief and nodded at her. I glanced at

Selena again and watched the corners of her

mouth twitch, but she said Keith’s name.

Jessica’s eyes scanned the group again and I

made my eyes big as she looked at me. She

raised her eyebrows at me and I nodded slowly.

“Emily,” she finally said.

I drew out of the breath I was holding and went

to stand beside Justin. After everyone was

picked, it ended up, Catherine was on our team,

I whispered in Jessica’s ear, “Thanks.”

Jessica smiled and turned to the person who

was holding the ball.

Justin was throwing the ball in the air and

catching it again. He threw it too high up and it

landed close to me. I scowled as I watched

Selena start to run for it. I beat her to it and as I

stood up, I made a funny face at her, sort of like

a frown and angry face combined. She stared at

me, surprised and backed up. No one else

caught the look.
