EPILOGUE
It was the Saturday morning after the case. After Elliot had died. Joe, of course still blamed himself, but he also couldn't give up the weekend tradition of taking Parker back to the merry-go-round.
"Alright, Parker, I'll put you up again, cmon." Joe said as he put his son back on the fictional horse. Parker smiled as his father left and it started to move again. Joe sat on the bench again. Moments after, Scott joined him silently.
"How'd you know I was here?" Joe asked as he drank his cheap coffee.
"Saturday morning. You two are always here. How's Parker?"
"I think I really freaked him out. He didn't wanna come this morning. But, I gotta put that right."
"That seems to be you all over. Putting things right... Kevin gets released from the hospital today, right?"
"Yeah... Yknow, what happened to Kevin happened because we had a personal relationship."
"Had?"
"People who work in high-risk situations, they cant be involved romantically because it leads to things like this."
"High-risk situations?"
"Every single day. Its with us. There's this line, and we cant cross it. You know what I'm saying?"
"Yes, I understand." They sat in silence after that, watching Parker. After the ride stopped, Scott stood up. "See you next case," he said before kissing Joe's cheek and leaving. Joe grinned and watched as he walked off.
