Chapter 9 - WOW
{2009}
We’d been back together for two years. Two wonderful years! We were backstage on the Larry King show; Marilyn was here promoting his new record ‘High End of Low’, and I’d promised to tag along.
It was a fantastic record. So open, so… wounded. He’d dedicated the song ‘Running to the Edge of the World’ to me on the album too...which had made me cry.
As one of the show managers came and told Marilyn he was on I kissed his cheek. “Good luck.” I winked at him as he stood.
“You know...you could come out with me…” He smiled lovingly down at me.
“This is your thing, enjoy it.” I smiled as he was pulled out of the room and turned my attention back to the screen to watch the show.
I smiled as Marilyn walked onstage. “Ahh, Marilyn!” Larry King greeted him with a smile.
“Hey…” Marilyn replied as he sat and the crowd cheered.
Larry pointed to the audience as they quieted. “That must be nice, having girls screaming over you.”
“Yeah, a bit…” Marilyn laughed shyly. “It’s different everywhere we go too.”
“The crowd?” Larry asked with a smile.
“The groupies, yes.” Marilyn nodded and grinned. “They make our lives interesting.”
“You’d have to be careful now though, wouldn’t you?” Larry smirked slightly.
“Hmm?” Marilyn smiled.
“That gorgeous creature you’re dating now.” Larry grinned and held up a picture of Marilyn and I. “Does she keep a firm hold of you?”
“Oh, in more ways than one.” Marilyn chuckled and winked. “Yeah, she’s pretty good with it, and the fans that meet her end up loving her anyway, so…”
“So it’s win-win, then.” Larry nodded with a cheeky smile.
“Yeah, more or less.” Marilyn agreed.
“You dedicated a song to her on your new album, yes?” Larry asked as he held up a copy of ‘High End of Low’ for everyone to see.
“Yeah, I dedicated one to her...but there are things in each song that refer to her.” Marilyn continued. “I’ve known Lily for most of my adult life and she’s been there for me at times when others I needed to be weren’t...so she’s a big part of my life and how I turned out the way I have.”
“She’s a very special part of your life.” Larry smiled sweetly.
“Yeah.” Marilyn smiled sheepishly and the audience “aww’d” at him. “You’re sucking the evil out of me man! Don’t make me look romantic in front of these people!” he laughed.
“Oh, I’m sorry. He’s the Devil, ladies and gentlemen!” Larry smirked at the audience and they all laughed. “Now...this record is amazing...but the song that drew me in the most was Devour...what exactly was that about?”
“Oh,” Marilyn paused and made a face. “That one was written about a time when I was just...in a really low place...it wasn’t good,” he chuckled. “And basically, what inspired me to write about that was one conversation i had that basically ended in ‘You wanna die with me? Ok, let’s go...but I’m gonna kill you first coz I don’t trust you.”
“Wow...that’s deep.” Larry let out a breath I didn’t think he’d known he’d been holding in. “Deeper than any of the rubbish a lot of the newer artists are coming out with at any rate.”
