The air was brisk and the wind made the cool temperature feel ten degrees lower. Anyone in Beacon Hills was inside of their warm houses, away from the chilly weather outside. The night was late, enough for younger children to be placed in bed and with doors locked for the night, serving families with no intention of going back out.

Perhaps that was why the three Raeken children had stumbled out of their own houses without jackets, knowing they wouldn't be caught by their own parents. The eldest child, Tara, had plans to go find her younger brother's toy that he had supposedly lost in Beacon Hills Preserve. She knew their parents would not approve of her late night adventure.

She took off with a flashlight and an intent to find her little brother's favorite toy. Tara knew how much he loved it. The distraught look on his face when he said he lost it during their walk through the Preserves with their father made Tara want to find it for him.

However, she was unaware that Theo had been trailing behind her ever since she stepped foot out of the house. He was prepared to follow her with his plan slowly coming along. Theo may had only been eight years old, but he was much more devious than the average person gave him credit for.

He stuck to the shadows of the trees, following behind his older sister. A deadly grin plastered on his lips. Deep down, he felt  guilty for what he was going to do, but he knew it had to be done, therefore, he would do it without hesitation. Theo wasn't just doing this for himself. He was doing it for his sister.

Several feet behind Theo, unknown to the other two siblings, Katherine moved through the Preserves with ease and grace. Her sneakers never stepped on a twig on the ground or made noise to give her position away. She was entirely too skillful to maneuver through the trees for an eight-year-old.

A gust of wind blew through the trees that sent goosebumps all over Katherine's arms and legs. She only pushed herself to run faster. When she heard her older sister slip out of the house, something felt wrong to her and she knew she had to follow.

Over the past week, Katherine noticed a strange difference in her twin brother. Something that felt off to her. Something that showed her brother wasn't the same as he had been when they were a little younger. Katherine may only be eight, but she had to grow up fast after her life turned upside down completely.

The Raeken siblings knew how much trouble they would be in if caught by their parents, yet they continued on their way through the Beacon Hills Preserves. Their parents had warned them several times to not go in the Preserves by themselves, especially so late at night. As young as the Tara and the twins were, they should not be alone in the dark woods.

Each of them had a different reason for being out so late. Two of them had no idea how the trip was going to end, only Theo had a decent idea because of what he had planned.

Katherine kept enough of a distance between her and her brother. She had this sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach that sent anxiety through her body, a feeling she hadn't encountered in over six months. The relationship she had with her brother was a strong one. They had been each other's best friend ever since they were born, clinging onto each other with smiles sketched on their faces.

At eight, the twins were constantly playing games with each other and causing any mischief they could on their family. After getting a little too wild in school, they were sent to the principal's office and sent home with a warning. Katherine was very protective of her brother, especially when he would have an asthma attack. She would do everything she could to get him his inhaler.

Tonight was the coldest night of the year. Each of the Raeken children were silently grumbling to themselves about how they wished they hadn't forgotten jackets. Their breaths mixed with the chilly air and they wrapped their arms around themselves tighter.
