Derek and Evalynn: Baby Day

Hello everyone. This is a special dedicated to my best friend Tirzah, who is the inspiration for Evalynn Parker in honor of her birthday, Feb 19th. Happy Birthday Tirzah. I love you!

Derek yanked the closet door open in a panick. Where was the damn thing? Shoving coats and shoes aside, he finally found what he was looking for; the diaper bag.

He snatched up the bag, and raced back out to the living room, half stumbling up the stairs. "I'm coming, Evalynn! Hang in there!"

When he made it out to the living room, he slung the bag over his shoulder and glanced around nervously for his wife.

"Evalynn?!" He shouted, half frantic.

"I'm right here!" The snippy retort came from the couch. He made around the couch in two strides, extending out a hand for his extremely pregnant wife stretched out on it.

"Come on, Evalynn, I told you to start standing up while I looked for the diaper bag! Now it'll take forever for you to get up!"

"I changed my mind," Evalynn said calmly, trying to control her breathing. "I don't want to do this."

"Uh," Derek licked his lips nervously. "I don't think it works like that, babe."

"Who are we kidding?" Evalynn drew her lips back in a grimace as another contraction wracked her body. "We're not ready to be parents!" She hissed in pain again. "Hell, just last week I was house sitting for Skylar and Harry and I killed their hamster!"

Derek's mouth fell open. "You killed Thor?"

"I forgot to feed him!" Evalynn moaned. "Harry was so pissed!"

"Okay, well Evalynn." Derek couldn't help but laugh as he sank down to his knees to hold his wife's hand. "I highly doubt you'll forget to feed our baby."

"But what if I do?!" Evalynn asked hysterically. "And you know, babies cry! A lot! And there are dirty diapers and spit up, and doctors appointments and-"

"Evalynn!" Derek said loudly. "Calm down, sweetie! It's okay! We can do this. I've thought about this long before you got pregnant. I've thought about it long before we got married. I've wanted a child ever since my second senior year. And you were ready to have a baby when you were sixteen. I think we've got this under control."

"But what if she doesn't like me?" Evalynn whined.

Derek chuckled. "Sweetie, I love you, but half the time I don't even like you."

Evalynn's laugh turned into a cry of pain as another contraction came on.

Derek squeezed her hand. "Are you ready to go have our baby girl?"

Evalynn smiled at him through the pain. "Yeah, I am."

"Hey Skylar?" Harry's voice yelled up the stairs.

"Yeah?" Skylar yelled back, pausing her game.

"Derek just texted me saying that Lennox is on her way. Who's Lennox?"

Skylar's eyes widened as she shoved her laptop off her lap, and dashed down the stairs. "Did you say Lennox? Are you positive it was Lennox?"

"Yeah, who is she?"

Skylar's face split into a huge grin. "Get the keys. We're going to the hospital."

David dimly heard Evie sleepily pick up her vibrating phone. "Evalynn? You woke me up from my nap." She mumbled.

After a minute or so, she spoke a little louder. "Woah, woah, woah, slow down! What's going on?" Evie drew in a sharp breath as she sat up. "Are you sure? Because last time they were just Braxton-Hicks...Okay, yeah, we'll meet you at the hospital.

David lifted his head off his pillow. "Evie? What's going on?"

Evie jumped out of bed, haphazardly throwing her hair into a ponytail. "Get the keys, get into the car, we need to go to the hospital."

David's legs tangled in the sheets as he tried to roll out of bed. He ended up on the floor on his elbows, pulling himself out. "What's going on?" He jumped up, tugging his sneakers on his feet. "Is someone hurt?"

Evie's spun around, a smile lighting up her face. "I'm gonna be an aunt."

"Tony!"

"Mhppf!" Tony mumbled around the whole donut in his mouth.

"Derek's calling you!" Tony's cell phone sailed over the back of the couch, and landed on the cushion next to him.

"H'lo?" Tony swallowed his donut too quickly and started coughing.

"Evalynn.....10 minutes....hospital." Were the only words Tony heard over his coughing fit.

"What's wrong with Evalynn?" He demanded hoarsely. "Is she okay? What about the baby, they're okay, right?"

"Tony, listen to me! Evalynn is in labor! I'm ten minutes away from the hospital! Meet us there!"

"Oh God!" Tony jumped up, spilling his donuts everywhere. "Okay, okay, we'll be right there. Do you need me to call anybody?!"

"No, we told everyone else, just get to the hospital!"

"Yeah, yeah I'll get Diamond! And Derek?"

"Yeah?" Derek's reply was a breathy mixture of excitement, fear and worry.

"Congratulations, man. I love you. And tell Evalynn I love her, and to keep breathing!"

"Thanks." Was Derek's excited reply before he hung up.

"Diamond!" Tony roared. "Get in the car! We've got a baby on the way!"
