Alexa sighed as she pushed the elevator button and leaned against the wall waiting for it to arrive. She slowly ran her hand through her hair while thinking about what had just happened. Why? she thought. Kelsey has ALWAYS been there for me, we've always been close, and now she's just gone? She never thought the day would come when she would lose her best friend. And to her brother at that. She closed her eyes and could remember every detail, the way Kelsey had acted strange that day and asked strangely if Carter would be there. The way Carter had avoided her that particular morning before school and quickly changed the subject every time she brought up Kelsey. The way they had come to her that one day and told her they needed to talk. She could distinctly remember the way they shared a secret smile as they sat together on the couch holding hands as Alexa was left sitting alone, feeling uncomfortable and forgotten. She could remember the very moment they told her they were dating. Alexa forcefully ran her hand through her hair and opened her eyes as she felt the same feelings she had felt in that moment. Abandonment, bitterness, jealosy, and the overriding emotion: loneliness. She knew things wouldn't be the same. That was two months ago, and even though time had passed, it felt like it was only an hour ago they had told her and left her sitting there alone on the couch while her best friend went off holding her brother's hand, giggling and laughing about private jokes as they went back to her house. She would never forget it. The memory was forever seared into her heart and her mind like it was forever etched in stone.
Ding!
Alexa jumped as the elevator started to open and forced her mind away from her problems. She had to get over this. She couldn't let it stop her, but she couldn't quite accept the fact that her best friend of 10 years had left her for her brother and didn't have time for her anymore. Stop being a baby about this! She scolded herself. You wouldn't be as jealous if you didn't see them holding hands all the time and hanging out around the house. And it's not like she ignores you. She still talks to you. Oh, who am I kidding!?! She groaned and finished scolding herself and walked into the elevator, smiling politely at the 2 guys already there.
She pushed the button for the 14th floor and leaned against the wall, taking out her cellphone to avoid any awkwardness with the two guys. As she pretended to be looking at her phone, she slipped occasionally glances in their direction. They were pretty cute, she had to admit! One was about her age, 18, with a dark brown, almost black, quiff and deep chocolate eyes. He met her eyes and his mouth curved up in a smirky smile. She looked quickly at her cell, trying not to blush. The other, she noticed, had deep brown curls and a handsome face. They both looked familiar somehow. The curly haired guy glanced her way and saw her watching him. His green eyes looked laughing into hers and he winked at her before saying, "Hi, my name's Harry."
Alexa blushed, embarrassed to be caught checking them out, and put away her phone saying "Alexis. Nice to meet you."
"You too." was the reply. "You live here?"
"Yes." Her thoughts drifted back to the day she found Kelsey and Carter coming out of the elevator together with Kelsey clinging onto Carter's arm. They were laughing and didn't see her, but she saw them as Carter planted a kiss on Kelsey's forehead and Kelsey reached up to kiss Carter's cheek. The memory still burned no matter how hard she tried to forget it. She closed her eyes and kicked the wall, forgetting she wasn't alone in the elevator.
"Hey, you alright there?" Harry's friend asked, looking sideways at her from where he was leaning against the wall with his phone.
Alexa's eyes flew open. "Oh I'm sorry! I forgot I wasn't alone." she apologized, blusing and feeling like an idiot. "I mean, not that I didn't see you guys or you're easy to ignore or anything, but you kind of are since you didn't say anything, but I don't want to give you the impression that I didn't notice you or anything..." she trailed off feeling even more idiotic than before.
