I was inside the burning house and it was beyond smokey. Flames were everywhere and I couldn't even see if there was anyone left behind.
"Hello!? Anyone there!?" I yelled through my mask as I waited for a response. Just as I was about to turn away I heard coughing. "Hello?" I called again trying to find the faint cough.
"Help." I heard a small cry.
"Don't worry, I am on my way to get you out of here. Just tell me where you are." I said trying to walk forward the foggy house.
"By the staircase closet. Hurry I can't breathe." the voice said again as I was approaching the child.
I opened the closet door and inside was a small boy who was crying and needed air. I grabbed the boy and slipped my mask over his face so he was able to breathe. Now it was up to me to get out of the house before it fell on us.
Searching for an exit I was running low on oxygen and I needed to get out. You would think being a firefighter I'd get used to all the fire and smoke, but I also had asma which made it worse.
"Jack! Jackie!" I heard someone call my name. It was probabely one of my co-firefighter. Getting closer to the voice they grabbed me and the little boy out of the house in enough time that the house collapsed just as we were out.
"Geez girl, you gotta stop teasing us like that. We thought we lost you in there." Mike said as he took the boy and I brought my hands to my knees trying to breathe. "Hey! She needs her inhailer!" he yelled at some more guys that were by the truck.
One of the other guys threw my inhailer at Mike who then gave it to me. After inhailing air I spoke, "Thanks."
"You gotta stop scaring us like that. We thought we lost you in there." he said as we walked back tot he truck.
I then took off the top part of the jump suit I was wearing and revealed my white tank top I was wearing. But when you are around fire a lot, it gets pretty warm very fast.
"I had to save that little boy in there. Just like my father said-" I started but then everyone else finished it.
"You must put the victims first before you think about yourself." they all then laughed. I guess I say his motto a lot.
"Thank you so much. How could I ever repay you." a woman said holding the little boy I saved.
"Oh you don't have to repay me. I was just doing my job." I told her.
"There must be something you want."
"We love brownies!" shouted Todd who was putting the hose back on the truck. I just rolled my eyes at him.
"Great, I will make my famous, chocolate carmel chooey brownies." the woman said.
"That sounds delicious." Mike said.
I just pushed him, "Okay, sounds good." I told her and she walked away with happiness.
"Hey Jackie, this is Sean Matthews, he is the new journalist here. He was going to write an article about this fire. He says he wants to ask you some questions." said Harry the eldest firefighter said.
He was like an old grandpa to me, so I just smiled at him and said, "Okay." I tried to wipe off the grease that as on my face so I wouldn't look totally like a slob.
"Like he said, my name is Sean Matthews and I am new here in Glenley."
"Well welcome to Glenley, it may not be your New York City, or LA, but this town is quite the family." I smiled at him.
"Thank you,-"
"Jacqueline Taylor, but I like to go by Jackie."
"Well Jackie it is nice to meet you." he said holding out his hand so I could shake it.
