Alone

The silence was heavy.

We were sitting in the kitchen for half an hour when she said with a sure voice "I'm leaving". Not an ounce of hesitation, not an ounce of regret were in her voice, but I knew. Because even if she was the best liar in the world, she could never fool me, the one who spent his whole life with her, his twin brother. I knew she didn't want to. I knew something had gone wrong.

"Ok." I said, "Go if that's what you want."

I had emphasised the "you want". Not much, but it was enough for her to understand that I knew something was wrong.

From the very beginning, we had never left each other. We were inseparable, and never said anything directly to each other. Even the most hidden meanings were like clear water to us. Just a glance and we knew what was happening.

But today, something was off. As if she didn't understand what I meant, she stood up and went up the stairs, to her room. Stunned, I didn't react until she arrived in front of the front door, a bag at her side, ready to go. I rushed at the door and grabbed her arm:

"Hey, what's wrong ? You can tell me, you know ? You can tell me everything !" I said, panicked. "I..."

She cut me in the middle and said, with a voice full of disgust:

"Stop clinging to me, it's disgusting."

I let go of her arm, dumbfounded, and said with a miserable voice:

"But... Why ? We were always so close, and now you want to go ? We knew everything about each other, even the most hidden meanings in what we said, we..."

"No. You thought you did, but actually you knew nothing. When we were little, it was cute of you to cling and hide behind me, but you're 19 now ! Learn to live alone like an adult ! I always tried to make you understand it was annoying, but you were the only one who didn't understand ! Now I have someone I like, and it's not possible anymore. Since you didn't understand, I had to come to this. I'm not even sure if I'm sorry. See you."

She turned her back to me and opened the door.

"You... He's manipulating you, right ? I can help you, I'm glad you let me know..."

The only answer I got was the door slammed.

In the middle of this corridor full of a muddy darkness I never noticed before, I realised I was, for the first time of my life, alone.
