In Your Hands

you were laying on my chest
you belonged there
and we both knew it

you spoke and spoke
until it all became one long word

fingers nestled in mine

ear against my ribs
lips just moving

until they weren't

you bristled

your head swiveled up to look at me
your eyes...
they were wide...with equal parts fear
equal parts confusion
"Y-your heart...I-I can't hear it"

frantically searching
you pressed you ear to my chest again

it shook
rumbled with a laugh

you looked up at me
thick brows furrowed
"what's funny?"

I closed my eyes
took a deep breath
smiled and tapped your nose

My hand closed around yours
then opened it up
"My love, don't you see?
you can't hear it
because you've got it...right...here."
