We were walking
it was dark and cold
But we were bright and warm
this was good

we were good
Or getting there

whispering secrets back and forth
telling little jokes
the wind whistled against my ears
almost as if it was laughing with us
we were getting back to normal

You stopped abruptly
"Look."
Your head nodded to the left of us

Two people...
They were moving fast
Arms and legs...dancing?
No
We moved closer
and a third form appeared between them
crumpled like paper on the ground

they were dancing alright
fist and feet doing a fast tango on the form in the middle
A gasp left my lips
"Are they...beating...someone up?"
you shrugged
"What should we do?" I asked
You always had the answers
"Go help?" You looked down at me
"Are you insane?"

"Yeah."
You began towards them.
"What? No! Stop!" I pulled at your arm
but you were too strong
forward you went

"But there's two of them-"
you shrugged "There's two of us"
I groaned
"What if they're armed?"
"They're not."
You always had the answers.

It was obvious my words were falling on deaf ears.
I sulked in silence
and followed your lead

They were getting close now
I could make out the figures
A girl and a guy
Taking turns
Punching and kicking
their grunts became louder as we got closer

"Hey!" You called out
"Maybe they can't hear us."
I rolled my eyes. "Maybe that's a good thing."
You waved me off
Ignored me
Something I had recently gotten used to
"We need to go closer"
No we don't

"Hey!"
You walked closer
I followed
The form in the middle became clearer
It wasn't a person, thankfully

You kept going closer
They were feet away now
I squinted
"...is that a.."
"It's a horse" you said

I felt queasy
Why would they do that?
"This is sick"
You looked down at me
"There's no way it's still alive" I said quietly

You moved closer still
They took no note of us
We were right on them
"Can't they see us?" You scrunched your face in confusion
"HEY!" I yelled
The man and woman didn't even flinch

You yelled
I yelled
They didn't hear us

"Stop beating the horse!" You yelled
"Yeah!" I continued.
"It's already dead!"

"We know" they said in unison
They stopped and looked up
The moon cast an eery spotlight on their faces
they looked us in the eyes

You jumped back
I gasped
"What the f.."

They...they were us
I was looking at myself
I was the girl
You were the guy

They walked away in opposite directions

We were left with the horse

The night got darker
We got colder

We stood in silence
But the question rang loud

What were they...?
Why were they...?

Are we...?
