Bella Swan; Lieutenant of Artemis

Chapter 4

I came to to the sound of harsh whispering, coming from the Woman and Thalia. Keeping my eyes shut, partially to block out the memories from earlier and partially to feign sleep. Thalia was in the middle of speaking, " ....against this my Lady. The girl in question, not only fainted due to the paltry sight of our campsite, but has also not experienced all that much trauma."

The Woman stopped whispering, but kept her voice down, probably because I was still 'sleeping'. Almost yelling at Thalia, She replied in a dark, scary voice, " I'm going to disregard the facts that you and her share many parallels,"(At this Thalia made an indignant noise which She ignored), "and the what you just said goes against the most fundamental  rules of the Hunt. You know, the one that is fundamental to our very existence. The one that states that any pure female who wishes to join the Hunt may do so, regardless of the circumstances, as long as she is willing to forsake the company of men." At this, I wanted to laugh. Forsake the company of men? Any man I was interested in, had already forsaken me. The Woman continued on with her tongue-lashing, oblivious to the irony I was finding in her words. "This woman was the mate of a Cold One, and got rejected in a cruel manner, not only by her mate,  but by those she considered family."

 The Woman continued on, but I was stuck on the word 'mate'. Ed- I mean he was my mate!?!?!?!! Unknowingly, as I sat up on the bedroll that I had been pretending sleep apon just a minute ago with my hands clenched and my eyes narrowed, the shadows in the corners of the room started to grow and darken with my anger. 

The Woman and Thalia came rushing in, after The Woman muttered " We'll finish this later." While clenching and unclenching my hands, I growl out, " He was my mate?"
