Tyler Joseph is a man with a heart of gold. But he felt empty inside. Although he had his best friend and only roommate, Josh Dun, he still felt lonely at most times. Tyler spend sad nights alone with no one to talk to, as Josh left almost every evening to party or hang out with friends. Tyler knew that Josh was a great friend to him, as he was there so often. But he still felt... empty inside.
One warm day in the middle of summer, Josh chewed on his drumsticks while Tyler played a few shy notes on his beautiful piano. Josh and Tyler had started their band a few months back- when rent seemed to catch up to the two boys and Tyler got fired from his only job at some bar. Josh insisted that he must get another job, but Tyler refused. Josh knew that his love for music was too much, and agreed to be the drummer to his piano and vocals.
But on this particular day, Josh looked to Tyler sadly playing a slow piece with that familiar hollow, distant look on his face. Josh flung his sticks in the air and banged on the drums so loud that Tyler fell right out of the piano bench.
"WHAT WAS THAT FOR!" Tyler yelled, and his hands flung to his short brown hair. He stressfully ran his hand through it as he hoisted himself up with the piano bench. Tyler's eyes shot at Josh, who sat with a goofy tiger grin.
He swung his drumsticks around in his hand before standing and exclaiming, "I'm bringing you to the music store across town. I think you need a new companion."
"A new companion?" Tyler asked suspiciously. "What do you mean by that?"
"I think you're lonely, Ty. You need a new instrument to waste your time with." Josh set his sticks down and made his way out of their lousy practice studio. "Get your shoes on!" he hollered after him.
Tyler sighed and treaded after his friend. He threw on his shoes and headed out to Josh's car, which was already started and waited for his departure.
The ride was short, but odd. Tyler didn't usually ride with Josh, as he was always out and about. He found it hard to keep his hands busy. He fidgeted with his hands and bounced his legs.
Josh kept sneaking a glance at his handsome roommate. Josh wanted to find a way to calm him down. He always had that nervous energy, fidgeting and crushing things in his hand. Josh was just used to it at that point. But he was worried about him. He spent most of his day alone in his room or on the piano with no social interaction. Josh tried to see his warm chestnut brown eyes, but Tyler looked away, out the window. All of a sudden the car swerved and Josh quickly jerked the car into place.
"Sorry," Josh muttered and gave another quick glance at Tyler to see his shocked chestnut eyes looking right into his.
When Josh pulled into the parking lot, Tyler perked up like an excited puppy. He quickly grabbed the car door handle, unlocked it and burst out before he car even stopped.
"Hold up!" Josh yelled, but he was already gone inside the store. Rushing to close and lock the door, Josh gave a full-hearted laugh. Tyler was so cute.
The music store smelt of new books and wood, which was very comforting to Tyler. He looked from left to right to see isles upon isles of different instruments. From brass, woodwind, string and percussion, this store had it all. Tyler was instantly drawn to the pianos, which took up a large amount of room in the gigantic store. There were newer styles, which were more electronic and also more modern styles, like Tyler's back at home. Grazing his hand over the smooth surface of a brand new piano, emotions ran through Tyler.
Did he want to spend what little money he had on a beautiful work of art like this? The piano was his first instrument. It was so beautiful and clean sounding. Maybe he didn't need to get a new type of instrument at all...
But Josh had a different idea. Seeing Tyler hypnotized by the pianos, he grabbed his soft hand and lead him down another isle. Brass. Maybe Tyler would like a trumpet or tuba. A cheap one wouldn't be even close to the price of a brand spanking new piano. Josh gave Tyler a hopeful look, but it was only returned by the usual look of gloom that Tyler constantly held. Maybe brass wasn't Tyler's thing.
Tyler found himself wander into another isle, which smelt of sweet fresh wood. The isle held some very beautifully carven guitars. There were mostly acoustic, but as the isle went on, there were some funky electric guitars.
"Maybe you'd want one of these?" Josh asked, appearing out of no where. Sometimes Tyler's mind wondered enough for him to forget the surrounding world. He shook his head gloomily again, but this time his soft eyes held another look- the look of hope.
Josh began to point out more and more guitars, trying to find the right match for Tyler, but to no avail. Tyler began to feel hopeless again, as the isle was practically at its end. Then he came across something different. He went passed the few violins and basses the store held and came right up to the instrument of his dreams.
"Hey! What's that?" Josh said from over Tyler's shoulder. Josh could smell Tyler's sweet aroma, like freshly baked cookies with sweet chocolate chips. All Tyler could smell was the sweet aroma coming from his new instrument.
"A ukulele. And a nice one, too." Tyler took it off the shelf and gave it a nice strum. It was gorgeous. It's soft brown colour and smooth wood made Tyler's hand tingle. The crisp sound from the strum made his heart flutter.
"Is it the one?" Josh asked, not even glancing at the instrument, only Tyler's happy grin.
"Yes," Tyler said, breathless. It was just so beautiful. He knew that it was the one.
"Alright, let's get going then. I'll get it for you." Josh looked into Tyler's bright eyes that held such a gratitude, Josh's stomach swirled.
After purchasing Tyler's new instrument, the duo drove back home. All Tyler wanted to do was play on his new ukulele for hours and hours, even though it was getting late. Which is what he did. Josh decided to stay home and watch Tyler strum the new ukulele with all of his heart. It made Josh's heart swell to see Tyler this happy. Maybe now he would see Josh in a new light. Maybe Tyler would see how much Josh really loved him.
