Weeks after that magical day, Tyler still strummed on his beautiful masterpiece. He played and played, never getting bored of the beachy acoustic sound the instrument produced. And when his fingers were raw from playing, he still held the slender neck of the ukulele. Tyler's best friend never left his sight.
On the other hand, Josh had grown to despise the thing. Although it made Tyler happy, he still had this oddly jealous urge to watch it burn as he sent it soaring over a cliff. Tyler might have been bad before, with his sad lonely eyes, but now they held this awful sickening look of deep love and overwhelming compassion. He no longer smelt like freshly baked cookies, as he hadn't showered ever since he set eyes on the ukulele. He was so... different. It made Josh's eyes twitch and tiger growl grow fierce. Could he be in love with an instrument!? Shouldn't he be in love with the one he's been with his entire life??
Out of anger and sadness, Josh left the house every night after his job at the radio station to party and drink. Of course Tyler didn't notice. He was too busy obsessing over his new best friend. Josh found himself detach from outside relationships and only worked on pleasing Tyler. He made his meals, paid his rent and washed his clothes. But still Tyler did nothing in return. Not a smile or a "thank you".
Finally Josh decided to talk to Tyler. Even though it was probably the hardest thing he could do.
"Hey Ty," Josh said cautiously as he swung open the practice room doors. "We haven't had band practice in a while, mind if I join?" At first Tyler ignore him, then gave a slight shrug without stopping strumming his favourite song, "The Judge".
"What did you want to play?" Josh asked, then held his drumsticks in his mouth as he set up the drums. Tyler shrugged, then held his ukulele in front of him.
"What did you want to play?" Tyler said, his words slow and lazy, as if he hadn't slept in a week. Which is probably exactly what happened. Shocked, the sticks dropped out of Josh's mouth.
"What the hell, Tyler?" Josh stood from his chair, taking a step back. "Are you talking to an inanimate object?"
Tyler finally look to Josh for the first time in months. His eyes were red from the lack of sleep. Josh felt tears forming at what Tyler had become. Tyler's eyes looked clouded and confused, as if he didn't recognize his childhood friend, only roommate and former secret crush.
"Go to bed," Josh demanded, voice powerful although his hands shook. "You're frickin insane. You need to sleep." Josh leaned forward to grab the ukulele out of his hand, but Tyler darted quickly to the side.
"STAY AWAY FROM MY LOVE," Tyler screamed with love, and tears streamed down his face. "GIT YOUR OWN FREN!" Well that's what Josh thought his crush said in heart-wrenching anger and Tyler stormed out of the practice room.
Josh's heart was torn into a million pieces. His friend, no, his best friend- no, his love was gone from him. Hated him. He couldn't handle it. The tears poured out before he could think, and he collapsed on the floor of the practice room with his hands over his face.
