Chapter 17

On April 22nd, the morning after her birthday, Annabeth sat, staring at her cup of milk that lay on the top of the Athena table. To some people, she looked like she was just sick. But to those at Camp, they all knew that she was upset about her boyfriend’s disappearance.

Nico walked up to Annabeth and sat down silently. Annabeth made no movement to acknowledge him. The two sat in silence until Nico thought that he should break the awkwardness.

“I was going to talk to you last night, you know, to wish you a happy birthday. But by the time I went to look for you, Grover said that he saw you leave.”

“Yeah, I left early.”

“Where did you go?”

“Eventually, I went back to my cabin. That was at three this morning. The rest of the time I was sitting on the docks.”

“Oh,” the two then fell back into silence.

After a moment, Annabeth had an idea. “Nico, what happened to that girl that you saw in the Underworld?”

Nico’s face paled, if that was even possible. “Um, I told you, she was left there.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. What did you say her name was again?”

“H-Hazel.”

“How did she die?”

“I’m not really sure. I think there was an earthquake, or maybe it was a landslide. I know that it was something that had to do with nature.”

Annabeth’s eyebrows rose. “Where did it happen?”

“Somewhere out in the northwest. It might have been Washington, or even Alaska.”

It was with this statement that Annabeth knew that her dream about Percy was true; Nico took Hazel out of the Underworld.

“Nico, come with me.” Annabeth said, and then she left the table and her glass of milk behind.

Annabeth walked ahead of Nico, who fallowed obediently. She led him to the Big House porch and then sat down.

“You took a girl out of the Underworld,” Annabeth stated, furious.

“Yes,” Nico muttered.

“Why? Why would you take someone out when you know the repercussions of doing this? In fact, you’re the son of the Lord of the Underworld, you should know better than anyone!”

“I know that, Annabeth.”

“Just answer me,” she demanded.

“She’s my sister.”

“What?”

“She’s my sister,” he repeated.

“What are you talking about? Bianca’s you sister.”

“Yes, Bianca is my sister. I was looking for her in the Underworld and I found Hazel. We talked and I figured out that she was my sister as well.”

“How? I mean, from what I know, Hades was in love with you mom. Plus, after World War II he wouldn’t be able to have any more children because of the pact with Poseidon and Zeus.”

“Pluto is her father and her mother had her before the war. She’s my sister because Pluto is my father’s Roman form.”

Annabeth covered her face with her hands for a moment. She sighed and said, “What happened to her after she got out of the Underworld?”

“She’s at Camp Jupiter.”

“How did she get out so easily?”

“The angel of death was taken, probably by Gaea’s people. Thanatos made sure the souls stayed in the Underworld, but since he was taken, the souls in the Underworld easier. This also means that monsters we have slain in the past have an easier time getting free.”

“Oh, great.”

“On a scale of one to ten, how mad are you right now?”

Annabeth sighed again. “You have no idea how mad, but I guess if I were in your shoes, I’d do the same thing.”

“So, are you going to tell Chiron?”

Annabeth thought for a moment. “No, I am not going to tell him; no one is going to know about this.”

“Thank you,” Nico muttered.

“Do you ever visit her at the camp?”

“I’ve gone a few times, why?”

“Well, I’m thinking that since everyone thinks that Percy is at Camp Jupiter. If you visit your sister, you may be able to see Percy there.”

“Do you really think so?”

Annabeth shrugged. “I’m the girlfriend, all I can do is hope that he’s going to be safe and not get killed.”

“Yeah, I guess so. Do you just want me to visit the camp and if Percy just walks through the camp borders and then let you know if I see him?”

“Yes, that is exactly what I want you to do.”

“Alright, then I’ll keep you posted.”

“You better,” she joked as Nico stood from his chair and waved before disappearing into his own shadow.

“Percy, I’m one more step closer to finding you,” she murmured.
