Mary had made up her mind. She wanted to help her sister more than anything. A few doctors came at the house and practically had to drag Cassandra out of the house as she screamed. Her screaming caused the other villagers' attention while I sat at the table with Jonathan and Victor, each of us not saying anything or even look at each other.
Mary watched from the doorway, as her sister was taken away in medical carriage. Her screaming had faded away and Mary came back into the house. I couldn't get what Cassandra screamed out of my head. 'I'm not crazy! Demons exist'! she would say. And, 'Don't trust that girl! She is an omen!'
For the rest of the day, it was silent between all of us...
Meals were silent. Chores were silent. Even getting ready for bed was silent. The girl, of coarse, was silent, but Jonathan had not spoken a word to her. Mary had avoided everyone's gaze. And Victor didn't say a word as well, except watch everyone with ease.
In the backyard, the girl stood in a little fenced area with a chicken coop. She spread little seeds to the ground as the chickens swarmed and pecked at their food. Afterwards, she saw a black cat that usually hung around at the house. Jonathan and his family were alright with cats, since they catch rodents and are decent animals. It meowed at her as it rubbed against her legs. The girl smiled small as she crouched down and pet him.
His green cat eyes looked up at her as he purred. The girl eventually left the cat outside and went back inside the house. She looked around the small, quiet home and it was empty. The girl stood there and then stared at her red cloak that hung on the coat rack. She placed it around her shoulders and decided to look around the town.
She didn't stay out for too long, since she didn't want to worry Jonathan and his family. As she was about to head on inside the house, she noticed Jonathan working in the shed nearby. He was a blacksmith and he looked in deep thought as he hammered the heated metal hard. The girl entered the house and saw Mary quietly making dinner. Mary had glanced at her then went back to cooking. The girl frowned and stood there awkwardly.
I had wondered why everyone was so silent. When I arrived, I was the only silent one and everyone else was talkative... but now... ever since Cassandra went insane, everyone was mostly quiet and didn't share looks at each other. I wondered if they believed what Cassandra had said about me...
The girl took off and hung up her cloak as she quietly sat down at the table. Mary brought out two bowls of soup for the both of them with a loaf of bread and sausage then she sat down across from her. The girl looked around wondering where Jonathan and his grandpa was. "Jonathan and Victor are visiting a few friends further in town. They won't be back till later tonight..." she said knowing why the girl looked around. The girl only looked down. Did Mary really dislike her that much? Or was she afraid?
The girl slowly nibbled on her loaf of bread and Mary had broken the silence that felt like forever in this house. "It's not your fault you know. None of us blame you," Mary said and the girl looked at her as she listened. "She went through a lot. Lost her husband and never saw him again..." The girl wondered why Cassandra's husband didn't return, but only glanced down, feeling sorry for her.
"All of us have had a rough time..." Mary continued as she ate and the girl sat there and listened to her. "Victor is getting old... Me, taking care of what family I have left and trying to pay for this house and food... and Jonathan..." The girl now looked more curious and concern about the boy. The boy that showed her kindness and made her safe... even made her have a certain feeling towards him.
"My husband... Jonathan's father..." Mary said but changed her mind, "He... left me when I was pregnant. He never wanted to be a father. I was heartbroken and felt like a fool to believe someone like him would want any children..."
