They had finished dinner and Jonathan was cleaning the dishes. The quiet girl walked to Jonathan's side and helped him with the dishes. Jonathan smiled down at her and she smiled back with a hint of blush. As they continued cleaning the dishes then the table, Victor stiffly got up and walked into his room to rest more. Mary had gone to check on Cassandra.
Mary knocked on her door and without a reply, she went in. Cassandra was sitting next to her window, leaning her cheek against her palm, looking upset. "Cassandra..." Mary could only say. "Why, Mary? Why would you let her stay here?" Cassandra asked. "Cassandra, the girl is lost and she can't even speak. She may not even remember who she is or..." It was silent between them as Mary stood there awkwardly. "What I'm trying to say is... she's someone who needs guidance. Guidance from someone good and not fall into danger." Mary said trying to let her sister see.
"Tell me Mary, what makes you think that she might steal Jonathan away?" Cassandra asked. Mary looked confused. "What do you mean?" "I've heard of things... things that are evil. My husband always stood by me, no matter what. When we had our own home after marriage, it was a new beginning for us. Our house was beautiful... we would have children... watch them grow up... and then my husband and I sitting on our porch watching our grandchildren play in the yard..." Cassandra softly said. Mary was silent as she remembered about her sister's husband and their dream.
"My husband did the same act as you did--took a girl in that was on the streets. Being the kind, and generous man that he was, he did everything for her. So much, that he was drifting apart from me. Next thing I knew, he was acting differently. I also could have sworn I saw a mark on the back of his shoulder... I remember it was black and had a strange symbol. And that woman he took in was odd and showed no emotion except to him. Days went by, and my husband showed me no affection at all... and then that day came. I waited for him, but he never came back..."
Mary stared at Cassandra, unable to speak. "That woman was also gone. Neither of them returned... My heart was telling me that my husband ran off with her, but my mind was telling me that there was something wrong. That woman seemed... not human..."
"What are you saying, Cassandra?" Mary asked a little shaken. "That maybe she was an enchantress..." Cassandra trailed off. "No... something more of a creature... a demon...?" Mary stared at her sister with wide eyes. "Demon? Sister, that's nonsense. They don't exist!" Mary said feeling scared. "Please, sister, you have to believe me!" Cassandra begged as she hugged her sister and begun to cry. "Please, you don't know this girl! She might come after one of us. Think of Jonathan!" she cried and Mary's face looked worried, but confused.
"Cassandra, the girl can't possibly-" "Don't rely on appearances, sister." Cassandra warned but still continued to cry. Mary said nothing else, but comforted her sister...

The girl and Jonathan had finished cleaning and Mary silently closed her sister's door, leaving her alone. Mary looked at her son, who was looking out the window. She then glanced at the quiet girl, as she was sitting at the table, head down, and hands in her lap being her quiet self. Mary then walked silently into her room...
The next morning, after breakfast, the town's doctor came to their home. Everyone was up, but Cassandra had stayed in her room. Victor, Mary, and Jonathan stood near each other as they watched the doctor examine the girl. At first, the girl was scared of the doctor and what he was trying to do to check her, but Jonathan had calmed her down and assured her, he wouldn't let her get harmed.
The grey haired doctor rubbed his chin after examining the girl's throat. He then checked her heart beat and then her lungs. The doctor lifted his hands then brought them down, making a gesture that it was obvious. "She's fine," he told the others, "She's perfectly healthy. Good lungs, good heart rate, good shape. Even good eye sight. Although," he turned to them, "She's able to speak, she just doesn't know how to." "How is that?" Mary asked.
"You said that this girl doesn't know where she came from...her age...and doesn't know who she is?" the doctor asked. "Yes. What are you trying to say, doctor?" Jonathan asked. "I'm saying this girl has amnesia." The family members didn't look that surprised, in fact they suspected that it would be this. "So, what should we do?" Victor asked now. "Well... I would suggest letting her stay here and in the meantime, teach her to speak. And help her in any other way. I'll be coming back soon to check up on her," he said as he gathered his belongings.
"Thank you, doctor" Mary said as she opened the door for him as he left. Jonathan then sat next to the girl and comforted her by wrapping his arm around her and rubbed her upper arm. Jonathan then looked up at his mother. "What now, mother?" Mary looked down at him and let out a sigh. "Well... we can start by giving her a name, until we found out her real one..." she suggested.
Jonathan had agreed with that. "But before that... I was thinking of getting Cassandra a doctor..." Mary had said in a hushed tone. "For what reason, Mary?" Victor asked. "I'm afraid she's going crazy..." Mary gazed at him fearfully. "Mother, she's always was crazy." Jonathan said. "No, Jonathan... this is different. She started talking something about demons..." Mary said, now trembling. Victor saw this and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Calm yourself, Mary. Don't let this affect you. We'll get her a doctor and quickly, before this madness spreads..." Victor said as he guided Mary to her bedroom.
The girl looked up at Jonathan, full of worry and fright. Jonathan stared back down at her. To her, she was the most fearful of all. She was already unaware of the situation. She could feel Jonathan's arms around her, however, she still felt unsafe...
