It was a dark, gloomy day. Rain poured from the sky in buckets as Carina Black walked down the street from the measly little house (if you could even call it that) she'd bought with the little money she had. She was having trouble finding a job, since everyone was still skeptical of her, despite her release from Azkaban. She'd been imprisoned for nine years and had just been released a week before this.
She and her brother, Sirius Black been wrongly accused of murdering their former friend, Peter Pettigrew. Carina had no idea what had become of the little fellow, and didn't care to find out. She'd been knocked out by Sirius for her own wellbeing (she wasn't as harshly punished as he was) and missed what had happened to Peter. All she knew now was that he was a traitor that could possibly still be alive.
And so it was, on this dreary day, that Carina was setting out to attend yet another job interview. She'd had five already since she was released from Azkaban and was turned down at each one. She wanted to give up, but knew she couldn't. After all, it had only been a few weeks. She was bound to get a job soon enough. Right?
She turned the corner into the leaky cauldron and walked through the door. Upon her entrance, she was greeted with a hostile stare from the bartender. She just rolled her eyes and tapped on the bricks to get into Diagon Alley.
"Carina, if you ever want to get a job, you have to loose the attitude," the bartender reprimanded her.
Carina just continued on her way though Diagon Alley without looking back. It felt good to be back at Diagon Alley, but some of it's former magic had been lost because of the stares from people walking along the street. Eyes bored into her from all directions as she passed by. She felt extremely self-conscious and was quite relieved when she finally arrived at Flourish and Blots for her job interview. She stepped in through the door and found herself face to face with the rows and rows of familiar books. She was so lost in old memories that she didn't notice when the manager stepped out from behind her.
"Are you Carina Black?" asked the manager. He was a tired looking wizard with orange-red hair and blue eyes.
"Oh, yes. Yeah, that's me," Carina fumbled, startled at the manager's sudden appearance.
"Good. Well, I don't care who you are or what you've done, you've got the job. Sorry to worry you about the whole interview, but I could use the help," the manager stated.
"Really? Thank you! I can't tell you how much I needed this job," Carina thanked.
"Well, it's no problem on my part, no one else wanted the job. And besides, I am aware of how difficult it can be to get a job after Azkaban. My brother was wrongly accused of murder and sent there. They later found he was innocent so he was released. He couldn't find a job for nearly six months, and he fell on hard times, he did," the manager sighed sadly.
"Yeah. Well, thanks," Carina replied, appreciatively.
"No worries. Have a splendid day!" the manager called, waving.
Carina walked out into the street feeling lighthearted and happy. She practically skipped down the street to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor to get herself some ice cream. She finally had a job, which was a reason to celebrate. True, the pay was low, but at least she'd be able to pay her rent.
After she'd finished with her ice cream, she started walking back to her house, feeling quite pleased with herself.
Author note:
Hello again, friends! The sequel is finally out! I know, this chapter was a bit cheesy, but whatever. My previous story did not end on a very good note, so I decided a sequel was probably a good idea. And yeah, I know I had it out before and deleted it, but I was just editing and fixing some things. I'll be reposting all the chapters as I finish editing. Thanks for reading!
