Carina and Remus were completely taken aback by the Ministry's refusal to even do a small investigation after they had told them what had gone down in Carina's house. Then again, the evidence was weak, as Malfoy and Oscar had successfully managed to get away without leaving a single trace of their presence. Not to mention, Malfoy and Oscar were far more trustworthy, at least in the eyes of the Ministry.
"What are we going to do, Remus? These guys are running around with some weird mission to get me to tell them about Harry and are going to use unforgivable curses and other cruel tactics to get this information," Carina lamented.
"That's not even the most alarming bit. It seems as though they don't care if we know what they're up to. Is it just complete overconfidence in our bad standing with the ministry, or complete overconfidence that he can kill us and get rid of the evidence completely? They could say they killed us out of self defense and the Ministry wouldn't bat an eye. Or maybe..." Remus trailed off.
"Maybe we just gave them all the information they needed and were screwed now," Carina finished. She began pacing around her living room, feeling increasingly more anxious as the bits and pieces of her current situation sunk in. She and Remus stayed silent for a while, deep in mutual panic and thought.
Finally, Remus broke the silence and explained, "No. They don't have everything they needed. They don't know if the protection is still in effect today, and that is vital if they are going to have You-know-who try and get anywhere near Harry in his current state. But that is information that could easily be figured out through other means—"
"But not easily! We've got time to stop them but not much. We just need to find them and wipe their memories, at least of the past day or something," Carina interrupted, instinctively jumping up and leaping for the door. She was determined to get out there and do something, whatever it was...
"What are you doing? We have no plan! Do you think you're just going to walk out there and find them just waiting for us to come and attack them? I think it would be wise to have some sort of plan so we aren't completely caught off guard and end up making the situation much worse," Remus exclaimed, calmly striding over and grabbing Carina by the arm and pulling her back over to the couch.
"I guess you're right. How are we supposed find them though?" Carina asked, slumping into the worn-down, faded couch.
"Certainly not by throwing ourselves hastily and mindlessly out into the open and running around until we see them!" He paused, his jaw tensing. "I... I think that maybe we should start by asking the ministry," Remus said, tentatively.
"What are you, crazy? We're just going to walk in there and be like 'yeah, sorry we just accused one of your workers of being a bloody Death Eater. Help us find him so we can beat his sorry a—'"
" Wait, hold on a minute. I think I have an idea," Remus said, holding up his hand to silence Carina, mid-rant. "What if we used the fact that we accused him as some kind of strategy? We can pretend we want to schedule an appointment to apologize, sort out our differences or something of the sort. I know it's a bit of a long shot, but it's entirely doable if we execute it correctly."
"Yeah, right. You're nutty, they won't believe us for a second," Carina laughed, sarcastically.
"Just trust me."
Carina thought for a minute. Well, Remus is usually right about these kinds of things. I really don't have any other ideas, either. Then again, if this doesn't go as planned we could be even more screwed over by the Ministry... "You know what, what do we have to lose? Let's do this."
