As Severide, Casey and I were clearing out the building, I heard a baby crying. "Oh my God! There's a baby!" I cried out as we rushed to find it. We found it sitting on the floor in the midst of smoke. I quickly picked it up and looked for anything that had its name on it, I found a birth certificate..her name was Bella. I covered her mouth lightly with a cloth and rushed out of there. "Fire Department! Call out!" Casey called out. We heard nothing besides Bella in my arms. "We need to get out of here!" Severide yelled. We rushed out of there. I spotted Gabby and Sylvie and rushed the baby to them. "We found her sitting in her room." I explained. Gabby gently took the baby from my arms and treated her. "Help!" I heard a voice in the house and I called out to Casey. Before the house collapsed, we rescued Bella's mother. The father was beside her, already deceased. As Casey and I carried her out, she muttered, "Please take care of my baby." Then, she lost consciousness as she was put in the ambulance with her baby.
Severide, Casey, and I were sitting in the waiting room. I was pacing around the room, the feeling of fear, guilt, and worry running through me, "How did I not know her parents were in the house until it was too late?" I kept asking myself "How?" until Casey grabbed my shoulders and sat me down, "Listen, Caroline. This isn't your fault. Things like this happen all the time. It's beyond our control." I nodded. Then, Halstead came into the room, a somber look on his face., "The baby is okay, but her mother...." I put my forehead in my hands and muttered, "No.." I burst into tears, crying for the baby. Knowing that she would probably be in foster care killed me. I know of people who have been in the foster care system. I've helped rescue those kids from abusive homes. That's when I said, "We can't let the baby grow up in foster care. There has to be family members who will raise and take care of her." "Luckily, I looked and saw that her mother's sister lives close by. I will notify them right away." Halstead explained. We thanked him. Severide asked, "Foster care?" I explained that I know of people who have been foster kids and that I've helped rescue foster kids from abusive homes. Casey and Severide understood. I looked at the cloth that I gave Bella to help her breathe. I got up, found a sink, and washed it and my hands with soap. I wrung the cloth out and dried it with paper towels. Then, I cautiously went to the NICU and found Bella. I found a pink ribbon on a counter and made the cloth into a bow with it, which I wrote, "God has an amazing future for you, little one. You are loved. Your angel at Firehouse 51." Then, I put it in her crib and left.
