I went upstairs and tossed my book bag on my bed. One of my parents should be home any minute. I walked downstairs and sat down in the living room, which is right by the door, waiting. A few minutes later, I heard the familiar sound of an electronic car door power locking, the jangle of keys, the door tumblers turning, and great, a business call.
I leaned back in the chair so I could see the human that had newly entered my house, "Hey dad." I said quietly.
He waved to me and continued talking, "No, we can't move the new product to Michigan until we've sold out in Kansas, we can't even announce it yet, why are we putting so much into it. We don't even know if our customers will like it. It's new and we've never done it before, don't go gung ho! How many times have I said that?" Pause, "Exactly! Why can't you wrap your tiny little pea brain around that, slow down!"
Okay, so you probably think that my dad owns some big business, no, he doesn't. His cousin's wife's great-uncle owns a grocery store chain and he's 'high up' in terms of grocery store cousin's wife's great-uncle's general district manager who occasionally helps organize shipping.
After listening to my dad ramble on about Kansas and Michigan and Miami and all those fun places mom finally showed up, and thankfully she wasn't on a phone.
"Hey sweetie, have you started on your homework yet?"
I frown, "No, how was your day, what's up, how's it going? By the way, I don't even have homework."
"Oh, well that's good. How's it going?" she smiles.
"Good, um I was wondering..." I trail off, "If, um, maybe... I could possibly, like, somehow... go to a small get together up the street? Like Springs Hills Drive close?"
"Sure, who's is it." she says, already in the kitchen focusing on something else.
"Oh, just Shawn, he's new and he told me I could invite Rae and Jayme. He just wants to meet some people, and he's inviting a few friends from where he used to live."
"Umm, Shawn... Mendes?" she frowns.
"Yeah, how'd you know that?" I frown before getting up and walking into the kitchen.
"Well, I've heard some things about him around town, and I just... I don't know how I feel about it. I just don't want you getting caught up in the wrong crowd, I'll have to talk to your dad."
I sigh and roll my eyes, "I'm pretty sure I'm old enough to go to a 'party' with six people, plus you said never to judge someone before you know their story. You know rumors, let me go, and I'll call you once every hour, deal?"
She hesitates for a moment, "Only because I believe you are a responsible young women who will do the right thing, what are you wearing?"
I smiled hopefully, "Well... that's where you come in." she sighs before reaching in her pocket and handing me two crisp 50 dollar bills, "Thanks mom, I love you!" I smile brightly. I would hug her, but 'Business suits must not get wrinkled.' so I walked upstairs and tucked the money neatly in my wallet before putting it back.
I noticed a small slip of paper tucked in a corner, I pulled it out. Duh, it's Shawn's number, it hasn't even been 12 hours and I've basically forgotten I had that, whoops. I programmed it into my phone and texted Shawn right then.
My mom said I can go! I just have to call every hour, this is Chloe by the way
I wonder if he has like, a life, and he won't respond for a few hours. I put my phone on the charger before going downstairs, "What's for dinner?"
My mom mumbles something while chopping lettuce like a madman.
"Sounds delicious." I say sarcastically before going upstairs again to listen to music and read until dinner time.
