The next day Kaneki went to go see Nina at the hospital again, when he got there she was even paler than before, she was so still while sleeping that at some point she didn't even look alive anymore. The sickness was eating her from the inside out.Taking a seat on the cushioned chair next to her bed Kaneki grabbed her hand and softly put his palm over it, stroking her pale skin. "Nina.' he said with a gentle voice her eyes opened slowly and the beautiful brown color of her iris met his, a smile came upon her face as she saw Kaneki. "How are you feeling?" he said worried, Nina squeezed his hand with what little strength she had. "I'm fine." her voice sounded so weak as if it was tiring to speak. Not being able to ignore how her complexion had gotten worse Kaneki needed to tell her, "I need you to come somewhere with me" he said while holding back tears. "Where?" Nina questioned quietly, her voice cracking in the middle of the word. She coughed immediately as she finished speaking, "I can't tell you that, just know that it will help you get better." he answered. Nina cleared her throat before talking again "That's pretty vague." "You trust me, don't you?" He responded "With my life." she answered back with no hesitation. "Good, because this is what this is about. Your life. I can't let you die. I wont let you die." she stared at him and saw pure determination with an undertone of worry and sorrow. "Well then what are we waiting for?" she said with a small smile.Kaneki grabbed a wheelchair from the hallway and brought it back to her room. Helping Nina into the wheelchair, once she was settled in he grabbed her duffel bag that held all her clothes and other essentials. Peeking out the door to check if it was safe to go he closed the blinds to her room and pushed the wheel chair out and down the hallway, before even making it to the elevator Kaneki heard a voice behind him. "What do you think your doing?", "I'm on my way to sign the discharge papers for Nina Mastuda." Turning around to leave he could see Nina's doctor approaching them, he stood before the two blocking the way to the elevator, "She's not well enough to leave" the doctor said sternly. "Please, she wants to spend her last few weeks at home."
The doctor's eyes flashed with a bit of sympathy before hardening back into their usual stare."Young man, I don't think you understand the severity of her illness. I can't allow you to take her, if I do she won't even have a few days to spend at home." The doctor answered in the monotonous voice used typically by people of his profession. Kaneki was about to speak before he was cut off by Nina's voice."I understand, and I take full responsibility for whatever happens, please just let us leave." The doctor's expression wavered before he finally let out a sigh and a barely noticeable nod .The duo let out a string of thank you's before rushing to the elevator and soon enough they two were outside. Kaneki gave Nina his jacket to shield her from the cold and then helped her into the car. Once he did that he pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "Levi it's me, we're on the way." was all he said before hanging up and driving away from the hospital.
