I opened my eyes.

Right in front of me, I see a light brown tabby she-kit with white flecks on her muzzle and cheeks. She had stormy, dark gray eyes and wore a bright cheery smile while hopping up and down. She looked ecstatic to see me.

"She's awake she's awake she's awake!" the she-kit meowed excitedly.

"She has always been awake, Cricketkit." a black tabby she-cat with white swirls explained. "Her eyes have just been closed for a half-moon."

"I know, Loonsong, but her eyes are actually open!" Cricketkit exclaimed. She gazed, wide-eyed into my eyes. What color are mine?

"Wow! Pantherkit has dark blue eyes! Like the night!" she mewled, astonished.

Pantherkit. My name is Pantherkit. Dark blue eyes? What else do I look like?

"Aw, wolf-dung! All I have are dull, boring, stone-colored eyes." the tabby said, disappointed.

"Now now, Cricketkit. Your eyes are not boring and dull. They're wonderful and beautiful, just like your little sister's." Loonsong purred, assuring her.

Sister. She's my big sister!

"Also, don't use that kind of language. Especially in front of your now open-eyed sister." the queen instructed, her tone serious.

"Thanks, Loonsong. Also, I only picked up that language from you." the kit replied with a sassy look on her face.

I purred quietly with laughter. The queen's serious expression turned into an amused one as she gently cuffed the tabby's left ear with a large black paw.

"Anyways, why don't you introduce yourself? It's not like she has deer fur in her ears." Loonsong joked.

"Oh yeah! Of course!" the she-kit said, in realization.

Cricketkit cleared her throat and turned directly to me, getting ready to speak.

"Greetings, fellow littermate, Pantherkit. I am your big sister, Cricketkit, and I shall be the best big sister this forest has ever seen!" the tabby she-kit meowed, proudly.

I giggled with amusement, a grin on my face as she finished. Loonsong stifled a chuckle behind the boasting she-kit.

"Come on! I'll show you around." Cricketkit suggested, padding towards Loonsong.

"This is Loonsong. Before you say it, no, she's not our mother. She's only our foster mom. But she sure does a good darn job of being our real mom!" the tabby claimed.

Loonsong smiled sweetly, turning her dark amber eyes toward me.

"It's a pleasure making your acquaintance, my dear Pantherkit." she purred as she touched her black nose to my cheek and nuzzled my fur.

"Th-thank you..Loonsong." I stammered, like a timid mouse. Nice going on your first words, weasel-brain!

"She spoke she spoke she spoke!" the bouncing kit squeaked, full of energy.

"She could always-" the queen suddenly cut off and sighed. "Forget it. I'm not going through this again." she laughed in between her words.

The queen suddenly licked my right ear, her dark amber eyes admiring how I looked.

"She truly is beautiful." the she-cat commented, a warm smile on her face. "Jet black fur, dark blue eyes like the night sky...really makes me wonder who would give up such perfect kits." Loonsong questioned, a slight frown forming.

"Give up?" I said, with interest in my voice.

"Whoever gave us up, will for sure be sorry!" Cricketkit challenged. "Because me and Pantherkit will someday rule the stars!" she continued, her fur fluffed up.

"Well, I don't know the exact details, but about two half-moons ago, a cat, presumably your mother or father, dropped you both right off on our border and left." the queen explained. "One of our apprentices, Warblerpaw, found you two and brought you to our camp. Our leader, Kitestar, accepted you and gave me the job of fostering you two." the queen finished, looking at both of us with warm, kind eyes.

"Wow." was all I could manage out of my mouth.

Cricketkit just looked confused, tilting her head to the side. "So..does that mean they didn't want us..?" the kit asked, her tone suddenly sad.

"Oh, no no no, my sweet Cricket." Loonsong comforted, pulling my sister close. "I'm certain your parents adored both of you." she continued. "Something must've just...gotten in the way."

The tabby she-kit looked down with her storming eyes. "Okay. If you say so." the she-kit said, that happy tone in her voice once again.

I hope Loonsong is right.

I let out a big yawn for such a small kit. I'm pretty sure the whole camp could hear me. What am I, half wolf?

My sister yawned right after me, exhaustion in her dark gray eyes.

"Sounds like it's time for moony dreams and starry streams." the she-cat mewed warmly.

My sister and I padded towards our foster mother and laid against her stomach, her warmth surrounding us and her long black fur tickling my nose, trying not to sneeze. Loonsong and Cricketkit closed their eyes, sleep overtaking them as dreams came in like a sparkling wave of a sky blue river.

I have a loving, big sister and a caring, kind foster mother. Are my mother and father still out there? Thinking about us? Thinking about me...?

With one last look at my family, I closed my eyes.
