There he was.

Standing in front of me was Calix Doneva, with his mischevious grin, and his onyx eyes. They hunted me down with pride and ownership; but he knew he didn't own me, even if he wanted.

The lace at the end of my ivory gown's skirt was swaying against the dried grass beneath my bare feet.

"Gwen, c'mon now, dance with me." I shook my head at his words. A queen did not dance in the middle of a clearing, in the middle of the night in the presence of a man. I blushed and turned away, "Calix, I already shouldn't be here, it's the middle of the night."

"It's your nineteenth birthday, have some fun." He stepped closer to me and I could feel the hairs on my skin stand guard. His dark hair had grown long enough  to cover his brows, and his eyes were already pinning me against a tree, but I raised my hand as I turned to face him. "Calix, I'm going home, before the guards come searching for me."

It was true that she had never left the castles premises before, and if she was caught with Calix, a mere apprentice, words would go around and she was a princess, a queen. She couldn't ruin her picture perfect reputation; not even for her lifelong best friend.

"Goodnight Calix."

"Goodnight mother," he shook his head as he made his way across the clearing. She hated it when he teased her for her pretenses, her properness. She huffed before marching towards the field. Then, it happened.

She turned to find Calix' with his wings spread wide and far as he took off. Her eyes grew wide in anger as she bursted in a sprint towards home. She could never love him, not the way he wanted her to love him. She couldn't mislead him, couldn't make him the way her parents wanted, and never would she be able to be like him, dark and mysterious.

She wore white and pastels, and you rarely saw her without her grown, adorned in gems and flowers. She was spring, she was the seasons, she was the birds singing at dusk and the rays of sunshine midday; she was beauty incarnate, and she was the daughter of the king and queen, and she would never be allowed to succumb to darkness the way Calix does.

Her wings would be made of dove feathers, not crows, and she was deemed to be the Queen of Equinox, the realm where spring was eternal.
