"Well, Ani, if you put the book away, you wouldn't have problems listening to me." My mother says to me as I write in my book.
"Sorry, mom." I place the book in my lap.
I continue writing as she talks to me.
Yes, I know, it's odd, but, it's not too hard. Ever heard of Lewis Hine?
No? Well, he was an amazing photographer.
He went around america, taking pictures of child laborers, during the time that it was an issue, of course, trying to get the world to see what was happening.
He knew that if he walked into the factories with a pen and paper in his hands, they wouldn't let him in. So he would put the paper and pen in his pocket and come up with and elaborate lie to get in.
What about the camera? Well, he came up with a lie about that too.
When he took the photos of the children, he had to make sure that no one saw him. So he'd write in his pocket. Its an amazing skill, so I decided to teach it to myself, I can write with out someone knowing.
Now onto why my mom won't stop nagging at me.
"Anilene, you know how much that book is distracting you. You need to focus on college, on your grades." My mother says.
"Well, mom, if you'd take the time to look at my grades," I slide my report card to her. "you'd see that is not a thing to worry about."
"Wow, Ani, I still can't believe you are maintains these." My father looked surprised.
"Well, english isn't hard because of my writing and grammar skills. Calculus is extremely easy, world history? Come on, you know I love history almost as much as writing. And creative writing, I wouldn't know what to think if I didn't have a one hundred in that class." I roll my eyes playfully.
"But, these grades are so amazing." My father states.
"Shes always had good grades, Anthony." My mother says.
"Its not like I have a one hundred in everything." I say to my father.
"Yes, but Ani, you're a senior, this is amazing." He says.
"I want to get into a good college." I shrug.
"I know, when does your letter come?" He asks.
"I don't know..." I say, scared I didn't get into Cornell University.
"Well, I'm sure it will be here soon. I believe in you." My mom says.
"Thanks mom." I smile.
I dismiss myself from the table to go back into my room. I look around and see the journals on my dresser I used up over the years.
I try to find the one from last year, the one I started writing in when I first met Tyler, an Internet friend.
"Come on, it has to be here somewhere." I whisper to myself.
After a while, I finally find the book.
"Yes" I smile, looking at the book. The front of it was quite simple, it was fake leather and a elastic band around it. Imprinted on it was the words "write about tomorrow". It was quite cute.
I look for the conversation I had with Tyler the night I applied for Cornell.
"I'm sure you'll get in, Ani, you'll be fine." Tyler smiles through the phone.
