Charlene's POV
I jump off of the bus's last step and release a sigh of relief. State testing is over, FINALLY. And yet my English teacher still gave me homework. Whatever, it's not like I can't do it in a flash. English comes easy to me, since I've always been a reader. I start walking towards the house, ready to just throw my backpack off.My brother is in the house by now. He always beats me in the house, ever since 5th grade when he started getting taller than me. He teases me about my height, even though I'm already 5'7" and will probably be around 6 feet when I stop growing.
I close the door behind me, and stalk up the stairs to my room and flop down on my bed. Aunt Michele and Uncle Tate don't get home until later, so I can go over to Mawmaw and Pawpaw's house until Aunt Michele gets home.
I tell my brother I'm heading out, to which I get a grunted "Kay" in reply, and then walk out of the house after grabbing my keys.
I climb over the fence beside my house, on my way to my grandparent's house. They live next to us, on their farm, which is very convenient when the holidays roll around every year. I walk over to the back door, and walked into the kitchen.
"Mawmaw! I'm here!" I yell into the seemingly empty house.
"Hey, sweetheart!" My grandma exclaimed as she rounded the corner into the kitchen. "How was school today?"
"It was good. I have English homework, but I should be able to get it done in 5 minutes."
"Good! Oh, I have something to give you. Follow me. "
"Okay. " I reply, intrigued. I walk behind her as she leads me upstairs and, into what could be called an office, I guess. It's has a computer, a bed, a recliner, and a vanity.
I look around, astounded.
"I've never been in this room before, Mawmaw. What is it?"
"It's your great-grandfather's old study." She replies, smiling slightly.
"I can still feel him in here sometimes. It's like he never left. Anyways, back to what I was going to show you." She turns around and opens a closet that was very cleverly hidden, and reached in to grab something I couldn't see.
"What's that, Mawmaw?"
"It's a book about a school. It's for witches and wizards, and they learn magic. I thought you would like it, since you love to read. " She smiles and hands the book to me.
I stare down at the old book, astonished. "Wow, Mawmaw, thank you. This is amazing!"
She chuckles as she leads me out of the room. "You're welcome, sweetheart. Oh, and you can keep it, if you want."
I follow her down the back staircase.
"Wow, Mawmaw! Thank you!"
She chuckles at my enthusiasm.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. Now, go back to your house and make sure that twin of yours hasn't burned the place down without you. " She winks at me as I laugh.
"True, I should probably be going. I'll call you if I need anything." I hug her tight, and slip out the back door and down the steps.
I turn and wave to her, since I know she'll be watching me as I go home. What I didn't know, however, is that when I turned to walk back home, she watched me all the way, even when she couldn't see me anymore. But she could see the golden spot if left that I hadn't noticed I made when I jumped off the third step. Mawmaw stood there, for who knows how long. Maybe 1 minute, maybe 15. But she was staring at that spot. And she was smiling.
A/N: I know this is a shorter chapter, but I wanted to get it published ASAP since I published the prologue.
