Bethany silently crept down the halls of the mansion. Places are always cooler at night, She thought as she slipped into her Dad's study. The first thing she did was go to the old big brown cabinet. The one she was never allowed to look in. But now, she was going to find out just what her Dad was hiding from her. She quickly glanced at the doorway- hoping that he hadn't decided to get up right then. She tried to open the cabinet, only to find it locked. "Blast it!" She exclaimed. She figured that this might happen, so she decided to pick the lock. She finally was able to open the door. Surprisingly, she didn't jump to open it. In fact, she was quite scared. She shook her head and told herself to snap out of it. Bethany was not afraid of anything! But she slowly reached out and put her hand on the door handle. Her hand shook as she started to pull it open. Bethany had to put her hand over her mouth when she pulled the door all the way open.

"Diamonds!!" She whispered, shocked beyond words. Bethany guessed that there was at least ten small diamonds and one big one.

"Wow.." She said as she reached out to pick up the big one. While she was admiring it, she happened to glance down at the spot where the diamond was sitting before she picked it up.

"A newspaper? What's that doing here?" She picked it up with her free hand and read the title. " Ten small Diamonds and one big- stolen from the Expensive Museum. "

Bethany gasped. "My dad?? No, He wouldn't." She said shaking her head, all the while not realizing she had spoken out loud.

" So, you've found out my secret."
Bethany spun around just as her father turned on the light.

"Dad?" She said while putting her hand up to her face to block the bright light. " I didn't know you were up."

She looked down at her hands. Her left was holding the diamond and her right the newspaper. Then she looked back up at her dad.
"You have made a mistake, Bethany. "

His voice boomed across the room and echoed in her ears. Her heart beat crazy fast. He reached into his pocket and she started shaking.

"No one was ever to know about that. I repeat, no one!!" He yelled as she shook more. He pulled his hand out and pointed it at her. Bethany was confused until she saw what was in it.

"No!" She screamed with tears running down her face. "Goodbye, Bethany. I'm sorry." He said as he pulled the trigger. "No one will ever know my secret."

He put the diamond and the newspaper back into the cabinet. "No matter what it takes. No one will ever know."
