Allen Goldberg felt no remorse for his loss. In fact, he felt nearly nothing at all. No one knew, that her lying in the earth, was his fault. No one knew the lengths he was willing to go to hide his secret. Bethany had, only in part, found out the truth. He wished to tell her, "Ha! So I stole some diamonds! I have stolen much more than those, child!"
He had wished her to join him one day, to not be lying in a coffin. He hated that he killed her, but not for the normal reasons. He was not amazed at how he kept such a secret hidden for such a long time. He remembered the look on her face when she realized that her perfect father was quite the opposite. He remembered her scream, it still burned his skull. He could still hear it, almost saying, "What have you done?".
He was lost in his selfish thoughts, when Amber, their neighbor, tapped his shoulder with a light, slim, and pale finger. He frowned down at her, for she was a bit more than a foot under him."What?" He growled. She shrunk back a bit and forced a kind smile.
"I am so very sorry about your daughter, Mr. Goldberg. She was a kind soul, always smiling and saying hello to me. Yes, she was a kind, kind soul." she shook her head in sadness. "Such a loss. We will miss her."
He looked away from Amber for a mere five seconds, and that was when he saw her. Bethany. She was smiling at him, but it was no kind smile. She was mad. He paled and began shaking. Bethany waved a small see-through hand at him, and, still smiling, floated backwards through the wall. He gasped. She was a ghost! Oh no! He felt another series of taps on his shoulder, only these were urgent.
"Mr. Goldberg, sir. Are you all right?" Amber asked, worried.
He looked down at her again, swallowed, and choked out a "yes" and "why". She looked around and then leaned closer."Well, sir, do you believe in ghosts?"
He shook his head.
"Well," she cleared her throat and looked around once more. "You look like... like you've just seen a... ghost."
After finishing, Amber walked off. And After that, Allen remembered nothing from that day. Nothing but the face of his daughter, smiling. And her awful wound. He couldn't help but assume that he had, indeed, seen Bethany's ghost. But why was she back? Since it was the only thought that passed through his head, he pondered it for an hour before realizing it.
Bethany was back to expose him of his wrongdoing. She was going to make sure that the whole world knew what he had done. She was going to avenge her own cruel death. He felt sick to his stomach for the first time, he felt guilty. He was afraid, because she would not rest in peace until he was dead. For the first time, he knew what it was like to be handed your own death sentence. For so long he had been handing it out, but now, he was on the receiving end. He looked down at the Bethany in the coffin. He allowed one, single tear to fall.
And then he was stone.
