I fly to Northern Woodland, Scotland, and slowly lower myself to the estates. It was a small spacey neighborhood near Kielder Forest.
I find my old mansion and as I come to terms with the ground I shift back into a human, my boots hit the ground with a thump that echoes. I remember building this beautiful stone house with the help of Kathryn, our bare hands stacked stone by stone by stone. The small black gate seemed so delicate against my now rough hands. I remember nursing the wounds Kathryn got stabbing herself to put this in the ground. I let my hands trace the beautiful gothic spikes for a moment. I sigh and push it open; the wind pushes it closed.
I walk down the oak wood path, brushing my hands upon the overgrown greenery. I get up to an identical black gate surrounding the porch. So many memories... painful memories. For some reason I shiver a bit as I open the gate, close it and walk up the stone steps. The entire house is stone, with oak touches; the interior coated in black and gold paint. There were rocking chairs on one side of the porch, a creaking wooden swing on the other side. Although now the wood has rotted and they remain shells of what once was. I remember Melissa laying down there; always a book in her hands. The second my hand touches the crystal knob the flashback slaps me, hard.
"We did it, Kay."
"Yea Jaz, We actually built this entire thing." She flashed me her biggest smile. I grinned back at her.
"I have a surprise for you Kay." Kathryn's smile becomes a simple smirk and she quirks her eyebrow.
I lean in and kiss her; slowly, we could die at any second, we're far more vulnerable than the humans.
Hopefully, the future can change that. Seeing as is was 1687 and Kathryn and I weren't married; it was a daring move. When I pull away she seems upset before I can apologize to her, Kay's priceless smile springs across her features yet again.
"Jasper Silver,"
"Aye?"
"I, love, you."
"Hey!" I tease, grabbing her hip, above her dress, and pull her as close as I can without ruining the miles of silk in between us. "I'm supposed to say that before you."
She snuggles her head to chest and I swear she mumbles, "Slow poke." I roll my eyes and lug this beautiful creature into this new home. She seems astonished by the furniture Melissa and I picked out. I close the door, she covers up her shock by teasing me again. Her evil smile spreads across her lips.
"What?"
"Nothing." she mumbles, laying her head back upon my chest, "Just wondering if I'm going to propose to you before you get there." She tries to hold in a laugh, I can tell it's there, I push her away and hold my hand out,
"Go for it!" She finally bursts out laughing. I guide her to the couch William and I built and we sit there, simply admiring all of our families hard work.
I shake my head and close my eyes, trying to get rid of the pain, trying not to remember what happened when we were sitting on the couch, the night I was going to propose, simply a week afterward. She, she, No. I will not think about this. I am an assassin; fuck this girl who's haunted me for decades, centuries. I shove the door open; nearly taking it off the brittle hinges.
Everything is exactly the same. I drag out everything covered in blood to the balcony and throw it over. I'll burn it all down; along with the memories of who I used to be - of who I will never be again. For now, though, I go and take a shower; hoping I'll actually get sleep tonight.
