rock I FILL MY LUNGS WITH AIR
-------------------

I fill my lungs with air and plaster a smile on my face. It's just Sarah, right? Yeah, she'll understand. As I breathe out my smile falters- would she really? Yeah, I'm totally a great guy, she's been on four dates with me and we've fucked a few times - but I was a valuable part of the military once and I'm only nineteen.

I walk up the stairs to her flat and press the buzzer. "I think we should break up" I look toward the speaker. Sarah?
"But, w-why?" I stutter. It's not like her to be this blunt, she usually beats around the bush for a good few minutes. I walk up the stairs and to the door where I can see her face.
"Well, you- you obviously don't trust me enough and you just- you always fight, like you want some sort of- some sort of glory." she looks a bit conflicted.
"No-no I can change, I- doesn't 'semper fi' mean forever?" I fish out the small engraved ornament she gave to me on our second date. Her face softens before a frown suddenly overtakes her expression and she looks at me angrily before tearing off her necklace.
"Keep it! I never liked diamonds anyway."

I look down at my hands, where she threw the necklace I gave her on our anniversary, and grit my teeth. After all I'd given her, after everything, she just up and LEAVES. I close my hands violently before wiping a tear from my eye.

I ran from the doorstep , vision partly blurred. I need to stay strong, but I also need to get myself pissed to get over it faster. After walking blindly in the cold, I see bright pink neon lights and hear smooth jazz music flowing from a nearby building- seems like I found where I'm staying for the night.

"Hey, bartender? Can you make me some real hard alcohol- doesn't matter what, long as it makes me forget real quick"
