for as long as he could remember, castiel had been absolutely enamored with the infinite complexities of human nature.
the angels had come first, of course, castiel's father leaving humanity as the last grand creation. and for a long while, heaven had been enough. he and his brothers raised each other, growing close through witty insults and playful shoves. gabriel and balthazar were his favorites.
but one day, when both of his closest friends were off on angel duties, castiel glanced down into space.
space had always delighted him. the vast expanse of nothingness, the collisions and supernovas and dying stars all carrying on in impenetrable silence. he loved the way that the seemingly twinkling stars danced, and the way the planets spun ever so slowly. but on this particular day, a specific planet caught castiel's eyes.

he loved the rich azure hues of the gaseous planet, the swirls of lighter shades that wrapped around it. blue had always been his favorite color.
and that's where his story really began, he supposed. because for once, he had fallen for something outside of the implicit boundaries of heaven.
